WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

Listless in Seattle

April 26 at Seattle Mariners

How was the trophy defended today?
It wasn't

Short Take: Sox bats go quiet as Mariners hand Mark Buehrle his first loss of the season.

At first, it looked as though this game would be a classic pitcherís duel. Unfortunately, the wrong pitcher won it by a final of 5-1. Right from the start, you could see that Jarrod Washburn had some good stuff going (and you could also see that the plate umpire was all over the place). Washburn retired the first seven batters he faced. Meanwhile, Mark Buehrle sailed through the first inning, but got into trouble in the second, giving up three runs on three hits and a hit batsman.

After that, things quieted down on both sides until the bottom of the sixth, when Raul Ibanez led off with a homer to make it 4-0. The Sox got one back in the top of the seventh when Paul Konerko singled, and Jermaine Dye followed with another single. Paulie went to third on a line out by Joe Crede and scored on a sac fly off the bat of Juan Uribe. Rafael Soriano came in to relieve Washburn and induced Chris Widger to pop up for the final out of the inning. In the Seattle eighth, Bobby Jenks came on in relief of Buehrle, and Seattle scored their final run on a sac fly by our old pal Carl Everett. Konerko and Dye got on in the top of the ninth, but a double play and a flyout ended the threatóand the game.

Bright side? Detroit lost, too. And WSIers in the postgame thread seemed for the most part to be taking the loss in stride. Now, letís get out of here and go beat up on the Whatever Angels, like we did last October!
