White Sox home opener set for April 12

Chicago White Sox Media Relations and MLB.com

CHICAGO -- Baseball fans can celebrate the return of baseball and springtime to Chicago when the Chicago White Sox open the 2002 home season on Friday, April 12 at 1:05 p.m. against the Baltimore Orioles. The first 20,000 fans through the gates will receive a poncho from ESPN Radio 1000.

Former White Sox players Joel Horlen and J.C. Martin, the tandem responsible for a no-hitter 35 years ago on September 10, 1967, will throw out the ceremonial first pitch. Horlen threw a no-hitter during the first game of a doubleheader against the Detroit Tigers at Comiskey Park. Horlen went 19-7 in 1967 with a league-leading 2.06 ERA. Second in Cy Young balloting to Boston's Jim Lonborg, Horlen tied for the league high that year with six shutouts. Samantha Barron of Northbrook, a fan chosen randomly at SoxFest in February, also will throw out a ceremonial first pitch.

Phyllis Arnold of Chicago will sing the national anthem on Opening Day. She sang her emotional version of the national anthem before Game One of the 2000 Division Series and before the September 18, 2001 game at Comiskey Park.

Gates to all White Sox home games at Comiskey Park open 90 minutes before game time. Fans are encouraged to tailgate in parking lots A-F from two hours before game time until the first pitch. Fans may seek autographs until 25 minutes before game time near the home and visitor dugouts.

Tickets for White Sox home games at Comiskey Park are available online at www.whitesox.com and www.tickets.com, through Tickets.com phone lines at (866) SOX GAME (866-769-4263), at the Comiskey Park Box Office and at official Tickets.com retail outlets, including Chicagoland Sears and Sears Hardware locations. Anyone interested in purchasing 20 or more tickets for any game should contact a Group Sales representative at (312) 674-1000.
