Love Me Two Times, Paulie!

April 15 vs Toronto Blue Jays

How was the trophy defended today?
Buehrle dealing, Konerko mashing, M&Ms guy sitting behind home plate... just like old times.

Short Take: Paul Konerko's two HR, four RBI assault and Mark Buehrle's ruthless efficiency carry the Sox to a win on Jackie Robinson Day.

Paul Konerko personally welcomed A.J. Burnett to the American League by tagging the Toronto starter for two home runs and leading the White Sox to a 4-2 victory over the Blue Jays.

As baseball celebrated Jackie Robinson Day, Mark Buehrle got the start on a brilliantly sunny afternoon on the south side. Buehrle was roughed up in the 1st inning, giving up three hits including a two-run home run by rightfielder Alex Rios. It had the makings of a long afternoon when slow-footed Troy Glaus stole second off one of baseball's best pickoff men, then made it to third base on a ground out by Bengie Molina. Buehrle threw 25 pitches before striking out Shea Hillenbrand to finally get out of the inning.

The Jays' $55 million dollar man A.J. Burnett took the mound in the bottom of the first. After a quick pair of outs, the hard throwing Burnett walked Jim Thome, then gave up a two-run blast to Konerko that evened the score.

Buehrle was all business after that, limiting the Jays to just two more hits over the next seven innings. The Jays went down in order in the 2nd inning, then Buehrle atoned for the earlier stolen base by picking Vernon Wells off to end the 3rd inning.

Burnett also recovered from his shaky start and held the Sox at bay until the 5th inning. With one out, Tadahito Iguchi reached first base thanks to a high throw by Jays' shortstop Russ Adams. Thome then lined out to Adams, bringing Konerko to the plate. Konerko promptly delivered his second two-out, two-run homer of the game and put the Sox ahead for good.

The bats went quiet on both sides after that. Burnett lasted six innings, then the Sox went down 1-2-3 in both the 7th and 8th innings. Buehrle went eight innings on the day, giving up five hits, two earned runs and two walks, while striking out four. He threw 105 pitches.

Bobby Jenks came in to face the meat of the Jays' order in the 9th inning. After striking out Wells, he gave up a hit to Glaus. Before the Jays could mount any kind of rally, Iguchi made the defensive play of the game. The next man up, Molina hit a chopper over Jenks. Iguchi raced in for the ball, grabbed it, and made a circus throw to first while airborne. Hillenbrand grounded out next to end the game. Buehrle picked up his second win of the season and Jenks recorded his fourth save.

The Sox's record now stands at 6-5. The rubber match of this series is Sunday afternoon at 1:00pm Central. Freddy Garcia (1-1, 9.00 ERA) will face RHP Josh Towers (0-2, 6.75 ERA).

Ozzieball Update:
A solid outing by Mark Buehrle and 9th inning defensive heroics by Tadahito Iguchi snuff out the Jays' hopes for another comeback.
