No Trophy For Today's Effort

April 5 vs. Cleveland Indians

How was the trophy defended today?
"The Sox more or less embarrassed the trophy today by leaving 14 on base.

Short Take:  In a sloppy game by both teams, the Indians pull away in extra innings.

Sunday the banner ceremony, Tuesday the ring ceremony, and today the trophy ceremony capped off the celebrating of the 2005 World Champs with the unveiling the World Series trophy to the 33,000+ in attendance for this afternoon's game. But, the Sox weren't able to give the fans much to cheer about in a 4-3 loss to the Indians.

Jose Contreras took the mound for the first time in 2006 and didn't seem to remember what the strike zone was in the first inning. With an out, Contreras faced a bases loaded jam facing Victor Martinez. A sac fly by the catcher scored the Indians first run of the afternoon and after walking Ben Broussard to reload the bases, Contreras hit Ronnie Belliard to make it 2-0 scoring Jhonny Peralta.

The game stayed 2-0 until the fourth. Tadahito Iguchi doubled to lead off the frame and was able to advance to third on a fielders choice off the bat of Jim Thome. Rob Mackowiak hit a RBI single to make it a 2-1 game.

The Sox took the lead in the sixth. Much like Contreras in the first, Indians starter Cliff Lee had trouble throwing strikes. Three batters were hit by a pitch setting up a Sox rally. With the bases loaded for A.J. Pierzynski the Sox were able to make it a tie game when Pierzynski became the second victim of the bean ball scoring Jim Thome who was also hit. Juan Uribe gave the Sox a 3-2 lead with a sac fly.

The lead wouldn't last. Sox killer Travis Hafner launched a long solo bomb off Boone Logan in the eighth inning to tie the game back up at three. Logan's appearance in the game didn't come without controversy from some of the arm chair managers in the park and at home. Brandon McCarthy came on to relieve Contreras in the seventh and pitched a scoreless frame while only giving up a single to Jason Michaels.

It's not like the Sox didn't have their chances in this one. In the bottom of the ninth the Sox had runners on first and second with one out but Paul Konerko struck out. Later in the inning, our Sox had a bases loaded two out situation. But, A.J. Pierzysnki popped up the first pitched to send the game to extras.

The Indians took the 4-3 lead in the eleventh. Casey Blake led off with a single and advanced to second. Jason Michaels doubled him in to give the Indians the lead and take the first series between the rivals in '06.

The Sox have a off day tomorrow and will head to Kansas City for a three game set starting Friday. Jon Garland will make his first start against Jeremy Affeldt at 7:10pm. The game will be on Comcast SportsNet.

GAME NOTE: Jermaine Dye started today's game but left in the second inning due to a strained calf. He was said to be day to day.

Ozzieball Update:
Champs or not, leaving 14 men on base won't help the cause.
