Hard-hitting Crede sent to Triple A

March 26th, from the Associated Press

White Sox third baseman Joe Crede, hitting .380 this spring, was optioned to Triple-A Charlotte on Monday.

The move was one of six the White Sox made, bringing their roster to 28 players a week before Opening Day. The team opens the season Monday in Seattle.

Manager Jerry Manuel says he doesn't expect the final three roster spots to be decided until this weekend.

The White Sox also optioned right-hander Matt Ginter and catcher Miguel Olivo, while infielder Tim Hummel was reassigned to minor-league camp. Reliever Rocky Biddle, still recovering from offseason shoulder surgery, was placed on the 15-day disabled list.

Waivers were requested on outfielder Brian Simmons for the purpose of giving him his unconditional release.

Even with his strong play this spring, Crede's demotion wasn't a surprise. Though he's expected to be the White Sox's third baseman of the future, there isn't room for him right now.

Jose Valentin will play third this season, and the Sox have veterans Tony Graffanino and Jeff Liefer as backups.

"We'd like to see (Crede) get a lot of at-bats," Manuel said after the Sox' 9-3 loss Monday to the Anaheim Angels. "To be as young as he is and to play sporadically, it would probably somewhat hinder his development a bit."

Biddle, 7-8 last season with a 5.39 ERA, just started throwing in the bullpen Wednesday. Manuel said there's no timetable for his return.

"But I understand he has been really impressive in his work," Manuel said. "He's been progressing very well, way ahead of schedule, from what I understand."
