Who's Choking Now?

October 1, at Cleveland

Sox Magic Number:
"Nothing left to play for, except putting the final nail in the Indians' coffin.  CLEVELAND SUCKS!"

Short Take:  Backed by 3-run homer from Tadahito Iguchi, Jon Garland wins 18th of season as Sox take 2nd game in Cleveland and push the Tribe to the brink of elimination.

Exactly one week ago, every mediot from Bristol to Sun-Times could only talk about the "Greatest Collapse in Baseball History."  The White Sox were playing .500 and the Indians were winning games they weren't even playing in.  And then Grady Sizemore lost a fly ball in the Kansas City sun.  Flash forward a week, and the White Sox have clinched homefield advantage in the play-offs and with Saturday's loss, the Indians don't even control their own destiny.

Jon Garland pitched spectacularly in his final start before the ALDS.  He and Kevin Millwood locked in a scoreless duel until Casey Blake singled hom Ronnie Belliard to give the Indians a 1-0 lead.  Until that point, Garland had allowed only a pair of hits in the first four innings, and the Sox quickly put Garland back on top.  After blowing a golden chance in the 6th, Aaron Rowand lead off the 7th with a single and moved to third on a 1-out single by Geoff Blum.  Pablo Ozuna's infield single scored Rowand to tie the game.   After Timo Perez flew out, Tadahito Iguchi hit his 15th homer of the year to near dead center field to put the Sox up 4-1.

After retiring the first two outs of the 7th, Garland was pulled in favor of Luis Vizcaino, who promptly allowed an RBI single to Aaron Boone and an RBI double to Casey Blake, and suddenly the Tribe were back to within 1.  Damaso Marte struck out Grady Sizemore to slam the door shut on the rally.  Marte ran into trouble in the 8th, though, allowing a single to Jhonny Peralta, a double to Travis Hafner, and walked Victor Martinez.  Cliff Politte, however, brought back shades of May, getting Belliard and Ben Broussard to innocently fly out and preserve the lead.

Bobby Jenks pitched a perfect ninth, striking out 1 en route to his 6th save of the year, Jon Garland's 18th win of the year, and the team's 98th.  Though, the Yankees defeated the Red Sox in Boston, meaning the Indians potentially could qualify for the post-season, but they would need to defeat Brandon McCarthy tomorrow afternoon and hope the Yankees take care of business at Fenway, despite the fact they have absolutely nothing to play for tomorrow.  Just a week ago, the Tribe was the media's flavor of the week, being described as the best team in baseball and other nonsense.  Their season could be over within 24 hours.  The Sox, meanwhile, finish their magical 2005 season tomorrow against Scott Elarton, before returning to Chicago, taking a day of much deserved rest and awate either the Red Sox or Angels.

Ozzieball Update:
No need for smallball today, as Tadahito Iguchi seals the deal with a 3-run homer.  The big story of the game is the lack of smallball by the Tribe, who couldn't buy a hit with runner's on scoring position.
