Sox Extend Lead over Tribe to 2.5 Games

Sept. 25 vs. Minnesota

Sox Magic Number:
5
Taking two off the Magic Number--Priceless!

Short Take: Buehrle shines against the Twins--with a little help from his friends!

Who would have thought that a day that started out with a rain delay and doubts about whether the game would even be played would have turned into one of the sunniest days yet this season? Mark Buehrle turned in an awesome performance against tough young Twins pitcher Francisco Liriano, and the Sox put some space between themselves and the Cleveland Indians. Buehrle retired the first nine batters he faced, giving up 4 hits and striking out 6 batters on the way to a 4-1 complete game victory, the team’s third win in a row.

The Sox seemed to have it all together today from the start. In addition to Buehrle’s stellar pitching, they got some timely hits from Aaron Rowand and Jermaine Dye. Paul Konerko’s two-run blast in the 3rd gave the team a 4-0 lead, and the Sox never looked back. The defense was sharp as well, and two stolen bases—coupled with some miscues by the Twins defensively—made this a fun game to watch.

As Sox fans would expect, the fans at the game were very much into it right from the start. When the final score of the Cleveland-KC game was posted on the scoreboard, the roar of the crowd was deafening. Of course, this brought the Magic Number to clinch the AL Central down to 6, and an hour or so later, it was 5.

Tomorrow, the Sox look to chop it down even more as they travel to Detroit, with Jon Garland going against Jason Johnson. Game time is 7:05 pm.

WSI's
Ozzieball Update:
Timely hitting, stolen bases, great pitching add up to a tremendous win.
