Chicago Decimates Detroit Offense

August 4 vs. Detroit Tigers

How many Grinders did KW use today:

"Podsednik, Iguchi, and Konerko get in it offensively, while Garland mows down the Tigers."

Short Take:Scott Podesdnik, Tadahito Iguchi, and Paul Konerko pump up the Sox offense, while Jon Garland gets his 17th win in convincing fashion leading the Chicago White Sox to a 2-0 victory and a 4-game sweep of the hapless Detroit Tigers.

Defeated. That is exactly how the Detroit Tigers looked during their entire weekend stay in Chicago. After killing Detroit by nine, eight, and four runs in the first three games of the series, Jon Garland and our beloved Chicago White Sox finished off the pummeling in shut-out (yet closer) form, 2-0.

The Palehose stepped on Detroit's throat early, as Scott Podsednik lead off with a single and was able to advance on a wild pitch by Jeremy Bonderman. He later scored on a single by Tadahito Iguchi. Before the first inning ended, our Sox already knabbed the upper-hand 1-0.

After both Garland and Bonderman retired the opposition in order in the next couple of innings, something outstanding occurred in the top of the fourth. With already two out, Magglio Ordonez and Carlos Pena recorded back-to-back singles for Detroit. Craig Monroe then scalded the ball down the third base line, and Pablo Ozuna made a split-second decision to dive down, throwing Monroe out in the process and saving most likely two runs. In the bottom of the same frame, Paul Konerko delivered the following blow to Detroit's head in the form of a solo shot that cleared the left field wall, immediately doubling the Sox' lead.

The rest of the game displayed very little offensive production, and Jon Garland closed this one out with a complete game shutout of the lifeless Tigers, allowing only four hits and six base runners (HBP and walk) the entire game. Our beloved Sox finished off their third four-game sweep since the All Star Break (the others were at Baltimore and Cleveland). Sox fans, our young stud has finally gotten his 17th win of the season, and maybe this performance will shut some mediots mouths when they say that his first half was "only a fluke."

With Cleveland losing today, our magic number has decreased into the teens for the first time this season. It currently stands at 18. Our Sox were supposed to get the day off tomorrow; however, due to a rainout last month in Boston, they must head to Fenway Park for a make-up game that starts tomorrow morning at 11 Chicago time. Our very own Brandon McCarthy will lock horns with the struggling Curt Schilling. The game will be aired on Comcast Sports Net Chicago.

Ozzieball Update:
Podsednik singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored in the first inning.
