WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

Two in a Row

August 25 at Minnesota

How many Grinders did KW use today:
"Garland up to the task, shutting Twins out for 7 plus; Timo scores a run and drives in Blum with the game winner; Jenks closes the door on the win."

Short Take: Sox take the series from Minnesota with 2-1 victory in 10 innings.

Jon Garland pitched a great game, one which he deserved to win. He ended up with a no-decision, but the Sox were able to overcome a questionable call in the 9th inning to come back and beat the Twins 2-1 in 10 innings.

Garland shut the Twins out for 7.2 innings, allowing only 6 hits and striking out 5 batters over that span. Twins starter Carlos Silva was almost as stingy, allowing only one run over 7 innings of work. The Sox scored that run in the third inning, when Paul Konerko singled home Timo Perez. Perez led off the inning with a single and advanced to third on a single by Carl Everett. The Twins had threatened to score the previous inning off Garland, but Michael Ryan was gunned down by Perez at home plate when trying to score from second on a single by Terry Tiffee.

The Twins also got two runners on base with just one out in the bottom of the 4th, but Garland retired the next two batters to get out of the inning. Garland retired the first two batters in the 8th inning before being lifted for Damaso Marte. Marte retired Nick Punto to end the 8th inning, but he would issue a costly one out walk to Justin Morneau with one out in the 9th inning.

Dustin Hermanson was brought in to get the last two outs of the game. He retired the first hitter he faced, but with two outs Twin leftfielder Michael Ryan hit a line drive down the first base line. Paul Konerko dove and got a glove on the ball in front of the first base bag, but the ball deflected off his glove and rolled down the rightfield line. While Konerko argued with the first base umpire that the ball was foul, pinch runner Luis Rodriguez came all the way around to score from first base to tie the game at 1. While a replay seemed to show the ball was clearly foul, the play stood as an RBI double for Ryan, and sent the game to extra innings. The Sox led off the 10th with a double off the bat of Geoff Blum. Joe Crede was the next batter, and he was hit on the hand with the first pitch while trying to lay down a sacrifice bunt. Crede had to leave the game and was replaced by Pablo Ozuna. Ozuna bunted an 0-2 pitch right back to the pitcher, Jesse Crain. Crain threw the ball to third base to try and get the lead runner, but Blum avoided the tag by Rodriguez and was able to advance safely. Perez then singled Blum home to put the Sox back on top 2-1. Bobby Jenks came in to start the bottom of the 10th, and he pitched a 1-2-3 inning with two strikeouts to earn the first save of his young career.

With the win, the Sox take the series victory from the Twins at the Metrodome. The Sox will ride their modest two-game winning streak out west to Seattle, where Orlando Hernandez (8-6, 4.75) will face off against rookie phenom Felix Hernandez (2-1, 1.24). Gametime is 9:05 pm CDT and will be telecast on WCIU.

Ozzieball Update:
Sacrifice bunt by Ozuna in 10th was not a good one, but Blum avoided the tag at third and went on to score the winning run. Strong pitching and defense in this one.
