Sweeping the O's

August 1 at Baltimore

How many Grinders did KW use today:
"Another great start by Buehrle despite the early exit. Plenty of offense to go around as Sox bang out 11 hits."

Short Take:Buehrle ejected in 6th inning, bullpen hangs on to finish the sweep at Camden Yards.

Mark Buehrle's consecutive game streak of pitching 6 innings or more per start was halted at 49 today, but the Sox were still able to earn him the victory today in a 6-3 win at Baltimore. With the win, the Sox completed a 4-game road sweep of the Orioles and further solidified their stranglehold on the AL Central.

The Sox got on the board in the first inning. Timo Perez drew a walk to start the game, and advanced to second on a wild pitch by Orioles starter Daniel Cabrera. With Perez on third and one out, Carl Everett singled him home with the first run of the ballgame. The Orioles tied the game with an unearned run in the second off Buehrle when Sammy Sosa scored on a fielder's choice. Sosa got on base to start the inning courtesy of an error by utilityman Pablo Ozuna, who got the start at second base today. That would be the only run the O's would get while Buehrle was on the hill. The Sox took the lead back in the top of the 6th on an RBI single by Jermaine Dye, scoring Everett. The previous batter, AJ Pierzynski, was hit by a Cabrera pitch which led to Buehrle's exit in the bottom half of the inning. No warnings were issued following Pierzynski's HBP, and tensions were already high due to Tadahito Iguchi's having to leave the game yesterday after allegedly being hit intentionally. But not according to Ozzie Guillen, who was 100% convinced Iguchi was hit intentionally.

With one man on and two outs in the bottom of the 6th, still a one-run ballgame, Buehrle plunked BJ Surhoff in the back in apparent retaliation. The home plate umpire tossed Buehrle from the game despite the fact that no prior warnings had been issued, thus ending Buehrle's streak. Luis Vizcaino finished the inning by striking out Chris Gomez and protecting the one-run lead. The Sox added to their lead in the 7th, on an RBI double by Timo Perez. The Sox added three more runs in the 8th, thanks to a solo home run by Pierzynski and a bases-loaded two-run double by Ozuna to make the score 6-1. Baltimore added two runs in the bottom half of the 8th to cut the lead to 6-3, but Dustin Hermanson shut the door in the 9th for his 25th save of the year.

The White Sox raised their record to 69-35, a full 15 games ahead of second-place Minnesota in the AL Central. The road warriors return home tomorrow to face the Toronto Blue Jays for a three-game set. Jon Garland (15-4, 3.09) will try again to become the first 16-game winner in the majors this season. Gametime is 7:05 pm CDT and will be televised on WCIU.
