Here's Y'er Offense

July 25 at Kansas City

How many Grinders did KW use today:
"A all out beatdown on the Royals buy our Sox!"

Short Take:  Freddy Garcia doesn't have his sharpest outing of the season, but the Sox bats LIGHT UP K.C. pitching in a 14-6 beating.

Aaron Rowand stood at second base with two outs in the first inning when the Sox bats started to pound Royals starter Zach Greinke. The attack wouldn't end with Greinke who lasted 3 1/3 innings, it didn't matter who the Royals sent out, the Sox mauled every pitcher that came out of the Royal bullpen en route to a 14-6 victory.

During a 3 hour and 28 minute afair, the Sox pounded out 14 runs on 22 hits. Everyone in the starting lineup but Carl Everett had at least one hit. The Sox set the tone in the first with two outs. With Rowand and Konerko on base, A.J. Pierzynski doubled to score Rowand to make it 1-0 Sox. Konerko advanced to third on the hit. Jermaine Dye then singled which scored Konerko and on a throwing error, Pierzynski scored. Joe Crede kept the train moving with a single which scored Dye. Even Willie Harris got in on the action. With Crede standing at second, Harris singled to score Crede for the fifth Sox run of the first inning.

The Royals though, didnt want to roll over right away. The top of their order would be the ones to get to Freddy. David DeJesus singled to lead off the inning and he advanced to third on Terrence Long's single. Sox killer Mike Sweeney hit a sac fly that scored DeJesus to make it 5-1 Sox. The Royals made it 5-3 after the third inning. With one out, DeJesus doubled, then scored on Terrence Long's RBI-single. Long advanced to third on a Mike Sweeney double, and then scored on a wild pitch by Freddy Garcia. Mike Sweeney would advance on the wild pitch but would stay there when Emil Brown struck out.

The Sox responded when they came up to bat. Juan Uribe started it off with a solo shot in the waterfall in left field. Scott Podsednik would then double and steal third on Rowand's at bat. After Rowand grounded out, Carl Everett and Paul Konerko walked to load the bases. That would be it for Greinke, enter Shawn Camp, but he would fare no better. Jermaine Dye singled which scored Podsednik and Everett making it 8-3 Sox. They made it 9-3 in the fifth after Carl Everett hit a sac fly to center with the bases loaded to score Uribe who eariler singled.

Terrence Long continued to hit Garcia in the fifth. He launched a two run homer to make it a 9-5 Sox lead with 0 outs. The next batter, Mike Sweeney hit a Garcia pitch to the wall in right field, but Jermaine Dye climbed the outfield wall like a spider to make the catch at the top of the wall. That was all the excitment for the Royals tonight. They got a lone run in the eighth, but that would be too late.

The Sox scored a run in both the sixth and seventh innings, and scored two in the eighth on a two run single by Juan Uribe. A.J. Pierzysnki put the final dagger in when he hit a solo home run in the ninth making it 14-6 Sox!

Whew! Did you get all that? Let's hope they save some for tomorrow when Mark Buehrle takes his 11-3 record against Jose Lima (3-8 6.92ERA) when the Sox(65-33) take on the Royals(36-63) in the second game of this three game series. Gametime is at 7:10pm and it will be televised on Comcast SportsNet.

Ozzieball Update:
What more could you ask for? Podsednik steals third base for his 51st stolen base and there were enough home runs, doubles, singles, and sac flies to go around!
