Fireworks Over The Cell!

July 4 vs Devil Rays

How many Grinders did KW use today:
"JD with 6 RBIs, Podsednik with his 41st stolen bag, and a nice job by Vizcaino out of the pen."

Short Take:  Sox and Devil Rays slug it out on the South Side, but its the Sox who come out on top 10-8.

After a two hour and nine minute rain delay, baseball was finally played on the South Side this Independence Day. Brandon McCarthy was making the start for the Sox and Hideo Nomo took the mound for the Devil Rays. McCarthy started off nice and so did the Sox bats.

With the bases loaded, Paul Konerko came up and hit a RBI single to bring home Scott Podsednik to make it a 1-0 Sox lead. Jermaine Dye then launched a grand slam in the seats in right center field to start the fireworks early and make it 5-0 Sox. But, the Devil Rays started to chip away. In their half of the second, Nick Green hit his forth home run of the season with two outs to make it 5-1 Sox. Juan Uribe would get that run back in the bottom of the second. He hit a solo shot to make it 6-1 Sox.

You got to hand it to the Devil Rays, they won't ditch you at the prom, they'll keep dancing with you. In the third inning, Aubrey Huff hit a 3-run home run to make it 6-4 Sox. In the forth inning, after McCarthy gave up a three singles in a row which would score a run for the Devil Rays to make it a 6-5 Sox lead. Ozzie saw enough and called on Luis Vizcaino to control the problem. He would, he got three straight outs to preserve the lead. McCarthy didn't fare well for the night. His line was three innings, eight hits. and five runs. Brutal. McCarthy was sent back down to AAA after the game.

The Sox put up a four spot in the fifth. With the bases loaded and no outs, Jermaine Dye singled scoring Thomas and Konerko making it 8-5. Aaron Rowand scored on a sac fly off the bat of Juan Uribe, and Scott Podsednik singled which scored Jermaine Dye. Sox up 10-5.

The sixth inning was Kevin Walker time. He gave up a single with one out, and quickly got the next batter to fly out. Could it be... a scoreless inning for Kevin? No. Jorge Cantu tripled to score Crawford, and then Aubrey Huff singled to score Cantu, to make it 10-7 Sox.The Devil Rays got only one more run in the eighth inning. Shingo gave up a solo shot to Carl Crawford making it 10-8 Sox.

Thats all the Devil Rays had on this 4th of July holiday. It was enough. Dustin Hermanson came on and pitched a 1-2-3 ninth getting his 20th save of the season. The fireworks quickly started after the game seeing it was 11:30pm and the 37,000+ Sox fans (or the ones that lasted) left for home happy. Tomorrow, Fredd Garcia (8-3 3.29) will match up against Mark Hendrickson (3-5 6.06) for the Devil Rays. Game time is at 7:05 and it can be seen on WCIU.

Ozzieball Update:
The big hits kept coming for the Sox. The slam, sac flies, and you gotta love hits with the bases loaded.
