World Series Dream or Nightmare?

by Mary Swiss

Last night, I had the strangest dream. I dreamed that the Cubs were in the World Series….

Okay, STOP! Now just HOLD ON, dammit! Not THIS World Series. Naturally I don't want the Cubs anywhere near THIS World Series; this one is all ours!

So if I might elaborate:

In my dream, I also dreamed that I had placed a substantial bet on the Sox to win it all in 2005. And I had placed this wager back in February. Of course, gambling on sports is wrong; we all know that. (Good thing this was all just a dream, huh?) However, if it hadn’t been a dream and if I had placed the bet, then when I made the trip to Reno early in November to collect, I would probably place a "reach" bet on the Cubs for 2006. (I also would place a bet on the Bears winning the Super Bowl on this, the 20th Anniversary of the greatest Super Bowl ever, but that’s another story.)

Hey, I love the Sox. I have been a Sox fan forever. I remember my Grandma sitting at the kitchen table in 1959 (I was 7), staring at the radio as if she could actually see the games, listening to them from start to finish, and rooting for Little Louie and Little Nell. They were her favorites. I remember her chanting over and over, “If you can’t get a hit, get a walk.” And often, they did.

And I still look back with mixed emotions on the Summer of ’69. I was 17, in high school on the North Side. My brother and I were probably the only Sox fans in the neighborhood, and that summer was pure hell for us. Until August rolled around—heh-heh-heh!—and we gloried in every Mets victory.

So naturally, betting on the Cubs to be successful at anything goes against everything I hold sacred. But my reasons for placing the "reach" bet on the Cubs are rooted in logic, Sox style.

The Cubs always copy things the Sox do, only not as well. For example, who had Sosa first? Who had Harry first? Who sang "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" during the 7th inning stretch first? So it follows logically that they will reach the World Series the year after the Sox win it all, and—being the Cubs—they’ll come up short.

But here’s the point. If the Cubs do get to the Series—especially the year after the Sox win it—then all the Wrigley Field fans (which is what the vast majority of so-called Cubs fans actually are) would have to stop with the “lovable losers” crap. Because then they’d be just another team that came up short in the WS. And a couple of years later, they’d be a trivia question that very few could answer.

And I ask you, what could be sweeter than that? So I think I’ll just keep dreaming, until my dream comes true. In late October 2005.
