Breaking the Spell

July 2 at Oakland

How many Grinders did KW use today:
"Congrats to Jon on MLB leading 13th win. Crede was clutch with 2 RBI, including game-winner. "

Short Take:Garland wins career high 13th as Sox even series in Oakland.

The White Sox made another stride towards exorcising past demons by breaking Oakland's 9-game winning streak and defeating the A's 5-3 in Oakland. Jon Garland struggled a little bit in the middle innings, but nonetheless turned in 7 strong innings to become the first pitcher in MLB this season to post 13 wins.

The Sox offense staked Garland to an early 2-0 lead in the second inning off A's starter Kirk Saarloos. Paul Konerko started the inning off with a double, and later scored on a one-out single by Aaron Rowand. Rowand would advance to second on a wild pitch and eventually came home on an RBI single by Joe Crede. Crede was 2 for 3 on the night with 2 RBI, including a key home run in the 7th that proved to be the game-winner.

Oakland came back in the 4th to even the score at 2. Garland hit Jason Kendall with a pitch to start the inning, and Kendall would score on a double by shortstop Bobby Crosby. An errant pickoff attempt by Garland sent Crosby to third, and he scored the tying run on a single by Eric Chavez. The Sox got the lead back in the sixth inning, thanks to an RBI single by Frank Thomas. Willie Harris singled and stole second base before being knocked in by Thomas to give the Sox a 3-2 lead. The game stayed close as Oakland got the run back in the bottom half of the inning. Kendall led off with a single, followed by a walk to Mark Kotsay. After a Crosby single, the bases were loaded for Chavez. Chavez delivered a sacrifice fly to score Kendall and knot the game at 3. Garland was able to work out of the jam and retire the next two batters without any further damage, setting the stage for Crede's two-out solo home run in the bottom of the 7th to put the Sox back on top at 4-3.

Cliff Politte started the 8th in relief of Garland and retired the side in order. In the 9th, the Sox added an insurance run when Timo Perez doubled home A.J. Pierzynski with the team's 5th run of the ballgame. Closer Dustin Hermanson pitched a perfect 9th for his 19th save of the year to preserve the win for Garland and the Sox.

The Sox will look to do the unthinkable and win the series tomorrow afternoon in Oakland. Mark Buehrle (10-1, 2.42) faces off against Barry Zito (4-8, 4.21) in the rubber game of the series. Gametime is 3:05 pm CDT and can be seen on CSN.

Ozzieball Update:
Three base hits in second inning lead to two runs; single and stolen base by Harris lead to another run in the 6th.
