WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

Lucky 13(th)

June 29 at Detroit

How many Grinders did KW use today:
"Crede, Konerko and Thomas for providing the offense; Uribe for his defense. The pitching staff collectively earns grinder status tonight as well."

Short Take:Strong effort by McCarthy, bullpen allows Sox to pull out 4-3 win in 13 innings.

Brandon McCarthy showed a glimpse of the future tonight, pitching 6.1 strong innings to give the Sox an opportunity to win the game. It took 13 innings, but they found a way to beat Detroit once again.

McCarthy's opponent was Jason Johnson, who was equally effective in 7 innings of work. The Sox struck first, taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the second behind an RBI single by Joe Crede and a wild pitch by Johnson which allowed A.J. Pierzynski to score. Detroit got both runs back in the bottom of the frame when Chris Shelton hit a two-run homer off McCarthy to tie the score. It was really McCarthy's only mistake of the night until Shelton tripled off of him to end his night with one out in the 7th inning.

After Paul Konerko hit a solo homer in the third to put the Sox back on top 3-2, McCarthy pitched out of trouble in the bottom of the 4th. In that inning, Ivan Rodriguez led off with a double and advanced to third on a groundout by Craig Monroe. Shelton then hit a grounder to Juan Uribe at short, who gunned Rodriguez down at home plate trying to score on the play. McCarthy retired the Tigers in order in both the 5th and 6th innings, nursing the 3-2 lead. Shelton then hit a one out triple in the 7th, and Neal Cotts relieved McCarthy. Cotts yielded an RBI sacrifice fly to allow the Tigers to tie the game at 3.

Tense moments in both the 8th and 9th innings, but both times the Sox kept Detroit off the scoreboard. Cliff Politte entered the game in the 8th inning, and loaded the bases with nobody out thanks to two singles and a base on balls. Politte settled in and struck out the next hitter, Rodriguez, on 3 pitches. He then got out of the inning unscathed by getting Monroe to ground into a 6-3 double play. Uribe's defense was key in the 9th, and saved the game. With two outs, reliever Luis Vizcaino allowed a bunt single by Nook Logan and a single by Brandon Inge to put the winning run for Detroit at third. Tiger second baseman Placido Polanco hit a ground ball deep into the hole at shortstop to score the winning run for the Tigers--except that Uribe was there to make the play. Uribe backhanded the ball on the outfield grass, turned and threw a one-hop strike to Konerko at first to gun down a headfirst-sliding Polanco and keep the would-be winning run off the board. Both teams continued to post goose-eggs until the top of the 13th, when Frank Thomas delivered the game winning blast. Thomas homered to lead off the inning, and reliever Shingo Takatsu maneuvered out of a bases-loaded one-out jam in the bottom of the 13th for a White Sox winner.

The Sox improve their Major-League best record to 52-24, and enjoy a 10-game lead over second place Minnesota in the AL Central. The Sox go for the three-game sweep tomorrow afternoon behind Freddy Garcia (7-3, 3.58). Detroit sends Mike Maroth (5-8, 4.09) to the bump. Gametime is 12:05 pm CDT at Comerica Park.

Ozzieball Update:
Winning with strong pitching and defense.
