Awwww Geeezzz!

June 26th vs Chicago National League Ballclub

How many Grinders did KW use today:
"Ozuna gets the start, and the game's lone hit for the Sox."

Short Take: Sox lose nailbiter to Cubs

If you asked fans of both Chicago baseball clubs how much this game meant to them today, you'd think that it was game seven of the World Series. Sox fans would tell you "Man, I hope we beat those stupid dumbasses from the North Side" while Cubs fans would tell you in between yaps on their cell phone "Woo! Sammy's gonna hit a home run and we're gonna sweep! Woo!" The deciding game of the Crosstown Classic was played at a jam-packed US Cellular field before 39,000 sweltering fans baking in the late June heat. Sadly, the game was won by the oh-so-mighty just-above .500 Cubs by a score of 2-0. The Sox and Cubs split the season series at 3-3, with the Sox prevailing in the Urinal on the North Side and the Cubs stealing two games on the South Side, overcoming a Friday afternoon drubbing to scratch out just enough runs to win over the weekend.

Mark Prior got the start for the Cubs in today's game, and Cub fans rejoiced as their Savior was near! Man a fan flocked to the visiting bullpen before first pitch to receieve a blessing from their Messiah as he sprinkled the blue-clad masses with Dusty Baker-brand holy water. Those same fans looked awful confused as they wondered why Mark Grace wasn't out on the field for pregame warmups. The Sox trotted out Jon Garland and his league-leading 12 wins to counter Prior, with most Cub fans oblivious to the fact that Garland is one of the many Cub prospects that got away.

Both starters were downright dealing in the early going. Garland was perfect through 4 1/3 before surrendering a hit to Neifi Perez, as Cub fans argued over if it was Shawon Dunston or Nomar Garciapara who was at the plate. Derrek Lee grounded into a double play to end the threat, sending Cub fans into a near frenzy as they somehow overlooked the fact that Lee almost singlehandedly kept them out of the World Series in 2003. Meanhile, Pablo Ozuna had signled for the Sox the inning before and reached second on a balk by Prior, but died at second base.

The Northsiders finally got to Garland in the sixth, as Corey Patterson tried his hardest to avoid a plane ticket to Oakland and ripped a fly ball down the line that just stayed fair enough to put the Cubs ahead. Faster than you could say Mark Kotsay, it was 1-0. The Cubs would add another run in the seventh on a Todd Walker sacrifice fly...and that was all it took for the Cubs to win.

Even though Messiah Prior was yanked after just 6 innings of work, the Sox couldn't get the job done against the Cubs oft-maligned bullpen. The Pale Hose had a chance to make it interesting in tne ninth when Timo Perez drew a leadoff walk, but Scott Podsednik fanned and pinch hitter Carl Everett grounded into a double play. Sox lose, Cubs win, fans groan.

With the hubbub of the Crosstown series over with, the Sox return to their under-the-radar quest for the divisonal crown Tuesday night against the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park. Mark Buehrle takes the hill against Nate Robertson, with first pitch set for 6:05 CDT.

Ozzieball Update:
When you can't get a runner past second, there's no Ozzieball to be seen.
