Scorching Sox!

May 7, at Toronto

How many Grinders did KW use today:
14
"Everyone is a grinder today. What a beat down that was Sox fans. Cherish this win."

Short Take: First place White Sox publicly depants Sergio Mitre and the rest of the pathetic North Side Losers for impressive 12-2 win.

All that hype for a blowout. On a day when the mercury flirted with triple digits on the South Side, even the Cubs manage to find a way to stay ice cold. Or maybe it was the brilliant work of Freddy Garcia that chilled the bats of the Baby Bears on this hot, hot summer day in the Windy City. Whatever it was, the White Sox made a firm stand that only one baseball team plays in this city's limits this year, humiliating the North Siders, 12-2.

The Sox got started early and often. Frank Thomas hit a 2-out home run in the first inning to give the South Siders a quick 1-0 lead. It could have been 2, but Scott Podsednik was picked off first after drawing a lead-off walk. Still, it would prove to be moot, as run support would not be a problem.

The Cubs did claw back into the contest in the third with a Todd Hollandsworth home run that knotted the contest at 1. However, it is about time we point that that was the only baserunner the Losers had in the first four innings. Meanwhile, the Sox offense already had wasted a run in the first, and threw away an opprotunity to score in the second. It looked like they would let no-name crap pitcher Sergio Mitre get away with his garbage pitches and never torch him. In the third, though, they gave Freddy back the lead. After Tadahito Iguchi sacrificed Pablo Ozuna home, the Sox took back a 2-1 lead. Two stolen bases by Scott Podsednik and a pair of walks to the Big Hurt and Paul Konerko loaded the bases, but a strike out by Aaron Rowand nearly ended the threat. Luckily, Mitre tossed a wild pitch, allowing the speedy Podsednik to score and put the Sox up 3-1.

It was tense. Mitre was throwing beach balls but the Sox couldn't connect. Well, not until 5th. Podsednik again set the table with a walk and moved to third on a single by Tadahito Iguchi. Frank Thomas sacrificed home Scott but a ground out by Paul Konerko again pushed the innnig to the brink with only minimal damage done. However, a pair of hits by Rowand and Dye chased Mitre from the game for Todd Wellenmeyer, who promptly threw a wild pitch to score Aaron Rowand. A.J. Pierzynski then cleared the bases with a deep home run to center field and the Sox were suddenly up 8-1.

Wellenmeyer found himself in hot water again in the 7th, allowing back-to-back hits to Rowand and Dye. A double by Pierzynski scored Aaron before Joe Crede connected on the third home run of the game to keep the pain coming. The Sox threatened, but didn't score again from the rest of the game. Though Jason Dubois homered off Neal Cotts in the 8th, the game was already won. The Sox made the Cubs look like a group of Little Leaguers. The Sox played like champions today.

The win also ensures that, at very worst, the Sox will split the season series with the Cubs, meaning there'll be no talking heads on the Score of WGN to mention that the Cubs are the "City Champs," or give the Losers some other inane title that no one cares about. The Sox and Cubs meet again at the Cell tomorrow afternoon. Same time, same place. Greg Maddux gets the nod for the Losers against Jose Contreras for the Sox.

WSI's
Ozzieball Update:
The three homers mask the team effort today. The offense was clicking in near perfect form. Probably had to do with the mediocre level of competition, but still nice to see nevertheless.
