Garland grabs 12th win

June 21, vs. Kansas City

How many Grinders did KW use today:
"Every starter today.  Jon Garland gets the nod for just being a beast out there, and everyone in the line-up did something good."

Short Take:  Jon Garland shuts down Kansas City for over 8 solid innings to become baseball's first 12-game winner this season.

Can you say enough about Jon Garland?  Entering this year, he was inconsistent, easily rattled, and and susceptable to giving up "the big inning" on the hill.  When he was slated to be the Sox's 5th man in the rotation, all anyone could have hoped for was Jon to win 12 games this year, as he has done in his previous 3.  We've gotten a lot more than that, as he has turned into one of the game's premier right-handed pitchers.  Tonight, against the Royals, he again was brilliant, keeping Kansas City off the scoreboard for 8 innings before running out of steam in the ninth.  In either case, the Sox won their 6th straight and Jon did match that career high for wins... with over half the season remaining to be played.

It wasn't going to be an easy task for the Sox, as they would face Kansas City's young ace, Zach Greinke.  For the first four innings, no baserunner advanced to second.  Garland was in command, only allowing a single to Mark Teahen in the third.  The offense, however, looked a little better than Kansas City's, but not by much.  Though they were getting guys on, they were also shooting themselves in the foot.

Finally, in the bottom of the 5th, the Sox went to business.  A.J. Pierzynski singled to left field and moved to third when Joe Crede singled to right.  It was an excellent job of adjusting to a pitch at the plate, as he dropped his bat (almost to the ground), to just drive a low and away breaking ball over the infield into right.  Pablo Ozuna hit behind his runners, groundind out to first, but scoring Pierzynski and moving Crede into scoring position, who came around to score on a single by Scott Podsednik.  The two runs would prove to be all Jon needed, but they got more.  In the 6th, Paul Konerko was hit by a pitch.  He moved to second on a single by Carl Everett.  Another single by Jermaine Dye packed the sacks with Sox and chased Greinke from the game in favor of Andy Sisco, but he'd fair little better in the spot he had been put in.  Pierzynski scored Konerko on a fielder's choice, but the Royals did manage to get Everett at third.  Joe Crede drove in Jermaine from second on a single, and Pablo Ozuna wrapped up the scoring for the Sox, on an infield single that plated Pierzynski.

The rest of the night was rather uneventful.  The Royals finally broke the shut out in the top of the ninth, when Terrence Long lead off the inning with a home run to right field.  Garland pitched to one more batter, Emil Brown, who grounded out to short before being relieved by Damaso Marte.  Marte made quick work of pinch hitter Justin Huber and sealed the win for the Sox and Jon by striking out Teahen.

The Sox go for their 7th straight and 2nd straight home sweep tomorrow afternoon against the Royals.  Mark Buehrle takes the mound for the Sox against rookie J.P. Howell.

Ozzieball Update:  5 runs, none courtesy of a big fly...  Good job by the Sox to get hits in key situations and keep the runs coming.
