South Side Slugfest

June 20 v. Kansas City

"Team effort as Sox pound out 17 hits. Iguchi, Konerko and Pierzynski with 3 hits apiece."

Short Take:Sox outlast Royals to take series opener 11-8.

Brandon McCarthy started this one, but he wouldn't be around for the finish. McCarthy, filling in for the injured Orlando Hernandez, got knocked around a bit tonight but it didn't matter as the Sox offense saved the day.

The Sox staked McCarthy to an early 3-0 lead in the first, thanks to a three run home run by Paul Konerko, his 18th of the year. KC got one of those runs back in the second with a couple of hits and an RBI groundout. The score remained 3-1 going into the bottom of the 3rd when Frank Thomas hit his 6th home run of the year, a solo shot to put the Sox up 4-1. Later in the inning, Aaron Rowand would double and score on a single by Jermaine Dye, putting the Sox up 5-1.

The Royals rallied to score two runs in the top of the 4th to cut the lead down to 5-3. Again, the Sox would respond. They would add two runs off Royals starter Jose Lima, highlighted by an RBI sacrifice fly by Thomas and an RBI double by Konerko. That inning would mark the end of Lima's evening, as he allowed 7 earned runs on 10 hits. McCarthy wouldn't fare a whole lot better, unfortunately. The Royals would load the bases on him in the 5th, and scored their 4th run of the contest on a balk. After the balk by McCarthy, Matt Stairs would hit a 2-run double, and the score was quickly 7-6. McCarthy would be relieved by Luis Vizcaino after allowing 6 earned runs in 4.2 innings on 7 hits and 4 walks, with no strikeouts.

Dye picked the Sox offense up right where it left off by leading off the bottom of the 5th with a solo homer, putting the Sox up 8-6. The pesky Royals just would not go away though. They delivered back-to-back homers off of Vizcaino to start the 6th inning, tying the game at 8. Neal Cotts would relieve Vizcaino with one out in the inning, and he was able to stymie the Royals offense by pitching 2.1 scoreless innings and allowing only one hit. The Sox scored three runs in the bottom half of the 6th to make a winner out of Cotts. Catcher A.J. Pierzynski blooped a two-out single with the bases loaded, scoring two runs and giving the Sox the lead back at 10-8. Joe Crede followed with an RBI single to give the Sox a 3 run lead. Cotts kept the Royal bats quiet until Ruben Gotay doubled with two outs in the 8th. That prompted Ozzie Guillen to bring in Shingo Takatsu, who induced Angel Berroa into a groundout to end the inning. Dustin Hermanson pitched a perfect 9th for his 17th save of the season.

The Sox are now owners of an incredible 47-22 record, a full 8 games ahead of second place Minnesota, who was idle tonight. The Sox will look to continue their 5-game winning streak tomorrow behind Jon Garland (11-2, 3.61). The Royals will send struggling rookie phenom Zack Grienke (1-7, 5.97) to the hill. Gametime is 7:05 pm CDT, and will be televised on Comcast SportsNet.

WSI's
Ozzieball Update:
Double steal in the 1st inning was nice, but subsequent 3-run homer was better. Offense was clicking on all cylinders as evidenced by 11 runs on 17 hits.
