WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

Completely Brilliant

June 17 v. Los Angeles Dodgers

How many Grinders did KW use today:
"Buehrle leads the charge, with run support provided by Thomas, Dye, Iguchi and Konerko and basepath mayhem by Podsednik."

Short Take:Buehrle goes the distance in shutout victory over Dodgers.

Friday night marked the beginning of Turn Back the Clock weekend at US Cellular Field, as the Dodgers visit the south side for the first time since the 1959 World Series. The pitching matchup in game one of the series featured a rookie versus a staff ace, and the results were in line with what one would have expected. The Dodgers sent rookie DJ Houlton to the bump against Mark Buehrle, who entered the game with a scoreless inning streak of 9 in a row.

The Sox offense struck in the bottom of the first inning. After Scott Podsednik walked to lead off the inning, he would steal second before Tadahito Iguchi reached on a HBP. With the first two men on, Frank Thomas was called out on strikes. At the same time, Podsednik and Iguchi, in Go-Go Sox fashion, proceeded to pull off a double steal to set up Paul Konerko for an easy RBI opportunity. Konerko took advantage, extending his personal hitting streak to 13 games with a single to right centerfield to put the Sox on the board 2-0. The Sox would score again in the bottom of the third off an RBI single by Iguchi. which would score Podsednik who had led off the inning with a double. The lead would climb to 4-0 in the fourth following a leadoff home run by Jermaine Dye, his third in as many games.

This was plenty of support for Buehrle, who scattered 8 hits and recorded 6 K's against 0 BB. In fact, the Dodgers only had one baserunner advance to second base all night, and that was after two singles in the top of the 4th.In both the 5th and the 8th innings, Buehrle allowed leadoff singles by third baseman Mike Edwards. Both times Buehrle got the following hitter, catcher Mike Rose, to ground into a double play. Buehrle pretty much had his way with the Dodger lineup tonight, they were unable to mount any semblance of a threat against him. With the shutout, Buehrle raises his record to 8-1.

There was another bright spot to the offense tonight, namely one Frank Thomas. Thomas homered for the third time in his last 4 games, a line-drive two-run shot off the left field foul pole in the 7th inning to give the Sox a 6-0 cushion. Two batters later, Dodger reliever Giovanni Carrera delivered some chin music to Aaron Rowand, hitting him with a pitch and prompting the umpires to issue him a warning. The game concluded without any further incident.

With the win, the Sox double-up their record to 44-22, still best in baseball. They will look to improve upon their record tomorrow as Freddy Garcia (6-3, 3.78) squares off against Elmer Dessens (0-0, 4.00) The teams will don throwback uniforms to commemorate the 1959 World Series. Gametime is 6:05 pm CDT.

Ozzieball Update:
Podsednik was a pest all night, reaching base three times and stealing three bases. Double steal in the first by Pods and Iguchi leads to 2 quick runs, and Sox never look back.
