Snake-bitten

"Dye, Everett, and Konerko provide all the offense with a home run apiece."

Short Take:Sox take it on the chin for second night in a row against Snakes.

The White Sox lost their second game in two nights against the Diamondbacks, dropping a 10-4 decision this evening. Orlando "El Duque" Hernandez was the victim, suffering his second loss of the season in the defeat.

Things started out well enough, despite some bad luck in the first. Scott Podsednik would reach on a bunt single and a throwing error by the catcher, putting a man on second with no outs. He would steal third, but was doubled off when Tadahito Iguchi screamed a line drive to Troy Glaus which he caught for the unassisted double play. After getting out of a bases-loaded one-out jam in the top of the second, the Sox would stake El Duque to a 2-0 lead in the bottom half on a home run by Jermaine Dye, his 11th on the year. The Sox held the lead until the top of the 4th. In the 4th, Glaus led off the inning with a home run to cut the Sox lead in half. After a double and a walk, Hernandez retired the next two batters before old friend Royce "The Choice" Clayton doubled, driving in two runs and giving the D-backs a 3-2 advantage.

Paul Konerko tied things back up in the bottom of the 4th off of Javier Vazquez with a solo homer which knotted the score at 3. Unfortunately, Arizona would break the game open in the 5th off Hernandez, scoring 3 runs and knocking El Duque out of the game after only 4.2 IP. Chad Tracy led off the inning for the Snakes with a double and scored on a single by Glaus. One batter later, Shawn Green would hit a home run off Hernandez to score Glaus and give Arizona a 6-3 lead. Hernandez would give up one more hit, a single to Jose Cruz Jr., before being lifted in favor of Luis Vizcaino, who would get the last out of the inning.

The Sox just couldn't mount a rally against Vazquez, who would pitch 8 innings and record 10 K's in a winning effort. The Sox did get two men in scoring position with two outs in the 5th, but failed to score. The Diamondbacks would tack on a run in their half of the 6th off Vizcaino thanks to three consecutive singles, all with two outs. After Neal Cotts pitched 1.1 perfect innings of relief, retiring all 4 batters he faced, Damaso Marte came on to pitch the 8th inning. With the score 7-3, Marte would load the bases, thanks in part to an error by shortstop Juan Uribe. With the bags juiced, Luis Gonzalez doubled off Marte to drive in two runs and put Arizona up 9-3. Marte would not record an out before being lifted for Shingo Takatsu, who allowed a sacrifice fly to Glaus which scored Chad Tracy from third to put the game well out of reach at 10-3. Carl Everett hit a home run to lead off the bottom of the 9th off reliever Lance Cormier, ultimately a meaningless run in a 10-4 defeat.

The Sox (42-22) will look to avoid a sweep tomorrow, as stopper Jon Garland (10-2, 3.23) goes against Russ Ortiz (4-5, 5.45). Gametime is 7:05 pm CDT from US Cellular Field, televised on Comcast SportsNet.

WSI's
Ozzieball Update:
Very little offense off Vazquez tonight; what little offense there was came courtesy of the longball.
