Sox Birthday Wish!

by Sox Fan Fred

This week marks my 43rd birthday. I have been asked by several relatives what I want for my birthday. Outside of a regular job ( I' ve been out of work for 6 months), the 3 things I want most for my birthday are:
- A Twinkies loss.
- seeing "the greatest baseball team on earth" (NOT!!) lose.
The White Sox have made a habit of winning some great games on my birthday over the years. In 1991,not only did the Bulls win their first NBA Championship, Charlie Hough and the Sox blanked the Rangers
in Texas by the score of 2-0.In  '93, Ron Karkovice homered in KC to give the Sox a 2-1 victory in extra innings.6 years later, in '99,my sister and brother in law took me to the Urinal (aka LOSERVILLE) to see the Sox play the sCrUBS.  We sat right behind home plate, 11 rows up. I saw Frank Thomas homer off Steve Trachsel and Mike Sirotka record 2 hits in an 8-4 Sox win.
In 2000,the Sox started their 14 day barnstorm to the A.L. Central title on my birthday.  A 7-6 victory in cleveland was the beginning of a 2 week stretch that saw the Sox play (then) powerhouse Cleveland Indians and the evilest empire of all, the Noo Yawk Yankmees.  The Sox swept the first 7 games (on the road, none the less).  They then came home and went 4-3 to finish with an 11-3 record against the Tribe and Yankmees during that period.
I am happy to report that tonight, as I sit here typing this article, Aaron Rowand gave me one hell of a birthday present. But there were several side gifts as well.Carl Everett's 3 hits and 2 RBI's, Paul Konerko's "ducksnort" single to knock in Everett to bring the Sox to within a run of the lead, 5-4, Juan Uribe's bases loaded walk to tie the game at 5.These were great side gifts.
But the main presents came in the form of the Sox bullpen, which held the Padres offense at bay until the Sox extended the game to extra innings.  That's when Rowand came to the plate with 2 runners on,
1 out.  He would face a lethal closer,  Trevor Hoffman, who had held right handed hitters to an anemic batting average.  Hey, Hoffman struck out pinch hitter Jermaine Dye with the bases loaded, 2 outs in the 9th.
Rowand wasn't in the batter's box long.  He took a Hoffman delivery and sent it sailing in to the second deck of the left field club section for an 8-5 Sox lead.  Cliff Politte finished his second scoreless inning of work in the bottom of the 10th to preserve an 8-5 victory for the Sox. Better news had been given to me a few innings earlier as i'd seen on the scoreboard scrawl that the Dodgers had edged out the Twins,4-3
( on my 43rd birthday, none the less. Nice symmetry).
Thanks for the present, Aaron.   won't forget this one for awhile. You're now in my history books "On This Day in White Sox History". It sounds corny, but it's even sweeter to see the Sox win a game on my birthday.
