A Day to Remember

May 30 v. Los Angeles Angels

How many Grinders did KW use today:
"Buehrle deserved the win for his effort today. Rowand with a key 2-RBI double, and Timo Perez with the clutch game-winner."

Short Take:Sox snap skid, celebrate Thomas' return with a 9th-inning come from behind win.

On a day when Frank Thomas would make his return to the White Sox lineup with a standing ovation, and Mark Buehrle would pitch into the 9th inning with the lead, who would have expected Timo Perez to be the hero? That was the case, however, as the Sox squandered a 3-2 lead in the 9th only to come back and win the game 5-4 in the bottom of the 9th.

Thomas' return to the lineup today was cut short by a strained hip flexor which led to Perez pinch hitting for the Big Hurt in the 7th inning. Thomas was 0-2 with a walk and a run scored in his debut, including a scorching line drive out in his third plate appearance of the afternoon.

The White Sox loaded the bases with no outs in both the second and third innings, leading to 3 runs off Angel starter Jarrod Washburn. In the second, Juan Uribe hit a sacrifice fly to put the Sox on top 1-0. In the third inning, Paul Konerko ground into a double play with the bases loaded before Aaron Rowand doubled, scoring Tadahito Iguchi and Thomas to give the Sox a 3-0 lead.

Buehrle was his usual self today, and held the Angels scoreless until the 4th inning. Steve Finley led off the frame with a solo home run to put the Angels on the board. Finley was Buehrle's main nemesis today, and later he would double and score a run in the 6th to cut the Sox lead to one run. Buehrle would start the 9th inning nursing a 3-2 lead before giving up two hits and being relieved by Damaso Marte with one out in the 9th. Marte would get rookie Dallas McPherson to ground into an apparent game-ending double play to second baseman Iguchi. But Iguchi would muff the throw to Uribe at second, everyone would be safe and all of a sudden the bases were loaded. Marte stayed in the game to pitch to righty Robb Quinlan, and Quinlan hit the first pitch into right field for a single, tying the game at 3. Marte walked the next batter, Chone Figgins, forcing in a run and giving the Angels the lead at 4-3. After striking out Finley, Marte gave way to Cliff Politte who was able to retire the next batter to keep the Sox within striking distance.

In the bottom of the 9th, the Sox went to work immediately off current Angel closer Scot Shields. Willie Harris, pinch hitting for Uribe, led off the inning with a walk. He would then steal second base, and Crede would follow with a walk. Scott Podsednik then dropped down a sacrifice bunt off home plate, advancing the runners to second and third. Carl Everett entered the game to pinch hit for Iguchi, and he would strike out for the second out of the inning. This left it up to Perez, who was batting in Thomas's spot in the order. Timo would deliver, dropping in a game-winning single to the opposite field to score Harris and Crede and give the Sox the 5-4 win.

The Sox conclude this Memorial Day with a 4-game lead in the AL Central and the best record in the Majors at 34-17. They will look to improve on that tomorrow evening as Freddy Garcia (5-3, 3.41) squares off against John Lackey (5-2, 3.88) at US Cellular Field. Gametime 7:05 pm CDT.

Ozzieball Update:
Downright awful execution early on lowlighted by Crede's double play bunt in the 4th. All is forgotten in the 9th as Podsednik moves the tying and winning runs into scoring position for Timo the hero.
