WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

Eleventh Heaven

May 24 at Los Angeles Angels

How many Grinders did KW use today:
"Buehrle is stellar in going 9 innings in a no-decision. Everett provided the power, Iguchi delivered the clutch game-winning hit."

Short Take:Buehrle, Sox outduel the Angels for 2-1 victory in 11 inning affair.

Mark Buehrle pitched another gem tonight as he held the Angels to four hits and one run through 9 innings, keeping the Sox in the ballgame until they were able to scratch out a 2-1 win in extra innings. Former Sox hurler Bartolo Colon was equally effective, allowing only three hits and one run in 7 innings of work. Neither pitcher would figure in the decision, however, as this one wouldn't be decided until the 11th inning.

The White Sox scored their first run in the second inning thanks to a home run by Carl Everett, a solo shot to give the Sox an early 1-0 lead. The Angels tied the game in the 4th off Buehrle. Chone Figgins started the inning with an infield single, and eventually scored on a two-out RBI double by Garrett Anderson to even the score at 1. Both pitchers would cruise through the rest of the evening pretty much unscathed. At one point, Buehrle retired 11 batters in a row and Colon retired 12 in a row.

With the score still 1-1 in the 9th inning, the Sox had their best chance to score since the second inning home run. Sox LF Scott Podsednik led off the inning with a walk off of Angel reliever Scot Shields. Tadahito Iguchi then laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Podsednik to second base. With Aaron Rowand at the plate and one out, Shields made an errant pickoff throw which landed in the outfield and allowed Podsednik to go to third. Rowand then hit a ground ball to short, and Angel shortstop Orlando Cabrera threw the ball to home plate to get Podsednik trying to score. Buehrle got himself out of a jam in the bottom of the 9th. After walking the speedy Figgins to start the inning, Darin Erstad would execute a sacrifice bunt to move Figgins into scoring position with one out. Buehrle then issued an intentional walk to Cabrera to set up a possible double play. The next batter, Garrett Anderson, popped out to third baseman Joe Crede, and Buehrle then retired Juan Rivera for the third out of the inning, stranding Figgins at second.

The Sox went quietly in the 10th, and reliever Damaso Marte came on in relief of Buehrle to start the bottom of the 10th. Marte pitched an easy 1-2-3 inning, and the Sox were still alive. In the 11th, Crede led off with a single off Angel reliever Esteban Yan. Slumping Juan Uribe laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Crede along to second with one out. With two outs and Crede on third, Iguchi drilled a Yan fastball for a double to left centerfield, scoring Crede with the go-ahead and eventual winning run. Marte would stay in the game and pitch a perfect 11th for the win. With the win, the Sox are now 32-14 and lead the AL Central by 5 games over the Twins. The Sox will look to continue to exorcise their west coast demons tomorrow night as Freddy Garcia (4-3, 3.56) faces off against Jarrod Washburn (3-2, 3.54). Gametime is 9:05 pm CDT.

Ozzieball Update:
Sox fail to take advantage of opportunity in 9th inning with Podsednik on 3rd and only one out. Iguchi laid down perfect sacrifice bunt to put Podsednik in scoring position, but he is thrown out trying to score on a grounder to short by Rowand.
