Can't Win 'Em All

May 22nd Vs Chicago

How many Grinders did KW use today:
"No grinder-worthy performances today. Insert joke about ground up meat to make hot dogs at Wrigley here."

Short Take: McCarthy sparkles, Vizcaino struggles as Sox fail to sweep city series.

Over the past two days, Chicago White Sox fans have had a lot to crow about. The Sox headed up to the "Friendly Confines" of Wrigley Field to endure 3 days of attendance jokes, barbs about their "trashy" fanbase and jeers from the Blue Sheep that pack the rickey green seats at the smelly excuse for a ballpark that the Chicago Cubs call home. Friday and Saturday, it was hard for Cubs fans to do any sort of crowing as the Sox walked away with back-to-back wins, but the Northsiders managed to scrape out a win to avoid a sweep against the Pale Hose today by a score of 4 to 3. Of course, most Cubs fans were either too wasted on Old Style or too busy yapping on their cell phones to even notice.

The buzz among the 10,000 or so Sox fans who attended today's game was all about rookie phenom Brandon McCarthy and his first big league start. Meanwhile, 25,000 Cub fans were busy flagging down the beer guy as they tried to catch a buzz and forget about how much their team really sucks. McCarthy showed composure and consistency on the mound throughout the whole game, as he fanned six and walked just one, while allowing one lonely run on a Henry Blanco home run in the second. Sox fans can argue whether or not he was lifted too early by Ozzie Guillen until the cows come home, but the fact remains that Brandon's debut was much more impressive than anything seen out of Felix Diaz, Arnie Munoz, or any of the Sox desperation callups from Charlotte last season.

Unfortunately for the Sox, Cubs ace, savior and water-walker Mark Prior was on the hill for this afternoon's tilt. When his elbow, knee, or ankle isn't nothering him, Prior's one hell of a pitcher and he dominated the Sox in the early going. Tadahito Iguchi finally put the Sox on the board in the fourth with a solo shot to even the score at 1-1 and silence the Cub fans who were convinced that Prior was on the way to a perfect game. The suddenly surging Jermaine Dye homered in the fifth to put the Sox on top 2-1, but then Sox bats fell oddly silent. Paul Konerko would reach third base in the fifth with just one out, but Juan Uribe and Joe Crede couldn't bring him home.

Luis Vizcaino relieved McCarthy in the sixth, inheriting a runner at first. Vizcaino promptly surendered a single to Corey Patterson and followed that with a 3-run home run from perennial farmhand Jason Dubois, and the game was pretty much out of reach. Paul Konerko would homer for the Sox in the ninth, but Prior somehow found a way to squeak away with a winner. Enjoy it while you can Cubs fans, the basement of the NL Central is beckoning.

The Sox head to the OC for a 4 game set against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim starting tomorrow at 9:05 CDT, in a true test of West Coast mettle. Jon Garland looks for win #9 against Ervin Santana, owner of a 13.78 ERA.

Ozzieball Update:
Podsednik popped up on a bunt attempt and the Sox try too hard to blast one out in the swirling Wrigley winds.
