Shutting down the Rangers

May 18th v. Texas

How many Grinders did KW use today:
"Signs of life from Konerko and Dye make them grinder-worthy. Pierzynski homers for the fourth straight game, and Buehrle delivers another gem in shutting down the potent Texas offense."

Short Take:Sox take series victory from Rangers with 7-0 rout.

Mark Buehrle became only the third 7-game winner in MLB so far this season, scattering 9 hits over 7.1 shutout innings against a potent Ranger attack for the victory. Buehrle got knocked around a little bit early, giving up two 2-out hits in the first and 3 in the second, but he kept Texas off the scoreboard and never looked back.

The Sox got two hits in the third inning off eventual loser Ryan Drese, but both runners were erased on failed stolen base attempts. First, Pablo Ozuna, playing third base today, singled and was thrown out trying to steal second base. Scott Podsednik was then thrown out for only the 6th time this year trying to steal second as well. The Sox would explode for 4 runs in the 4th inning, courtesy of the recently much-maligned Jermaine Dye. After Aaron Rowand doubled to lead off the inning, Paul Konerko singled and AJ Pierzynski walked, loading the bases for Dye with nobody out. Dye delivered a double to left, scoring Rowand and Konerko to put the Sox on top 2-0. After an intentional walk to Carl Everett loaded the bases again, Juan Uribe hit a single to center to bring home Pierzynski and Dye to make the score 4-0 Sox.

This was more than enough for Buehrle today, as he would only allow two more baserunners until the 8th inning. The Sox did provide some more insurance, however, in the form of home runs. Konerko led off the bottom of the 6th inning with a solo shot, his 10th of the season. He was 3-4 today with 3 runs scored, bringing his batting average back up over the .200 mark to .211. Pierzynski would homer in the 8th, a two-run shot to extend his consecutive games with a home run streak to 4 games. In the top of the 8th, Buehrle would allow two singles before being relieved by Cliff Politte in what was a 5-0 game at the time. Politte would retire the only two batters he faced to end the inning and keep the Rangers off the scoreboard. The Pierzynski homer made the score 7-0, and Neal Cotts pitched a scoreless 9th inning to preserve the shutout and the win. With the victory, the Sox raise their Major-League best record to 29-12. Wow.

The White Sox hope to continue their winning ways this weekend, when they travel 8.1 miles north to take on the crosstown rival Cubs in a 3 game series. After an off day tomorrow, the opener pits Freddy Garcia (3-3, 4.02) against Greg Maddux (2-1, 4.15) in a Friday afternoon contest at Wrigley Field. Gametime is 1:20 pm CDT.

Ozzieball Update:
Running game was about the only thing that didn't work today, 3 CS with 0 SB.
