Can't Win Them All

May 14 vs. Orioles

How many Grinders did KW use today:
"Podsednik goes wild on the base pads, and Iguchi, Rowand, Dye, Uribe try their best to keep the Sox in the game."

Short Take: Sox can't stop the O's 15-hit attack in this 9-6 loss.

The two best teams in the American Leauge faced off for the third time Saturday at US Cellular Field and this time, the Orioles would take round three. We've all heard about the offense this team had and it was pretty non-existant the last two nights...tonight the O's kept beating Sox starter Freddy Garcia and wouldn't stop.

With two outs in the Sox half of the 2nd inning, and the Orioles leading 2-1, Willie Harris walked on four pitches and stole second, Juan Uribe came up next and hit a RBI double that scored Harris and the Sox tied the game 2-2. Scott Podsednik then walked and scored with Uribe on Tadahito Iguchi's 2-run double that put the Sox up 4-2. The Sox made it 5-2 in the 3rd when Joe Crede hit a RBI single that scored Paul Konerko who walked and advanced to second on a hit-by-pitch to Jermaine Dye.

Freddy Garcia didn't seem to have it tonight folks, it seemed that he settled down for a while but, the Orioles tied the game 5-5 in the 4th. Garcia gave up back-to-back home runs to BJ Surhoff and Jay Gibbons. He then gave up a single to Jeff Fiorentino, Fiorentino scored on Brian Roberts double.

The Orioles got to Garcia in the 7th, Melvin Mora lead off the inning with a walk and he scored when Miguel Tejada doubled. That would be it for Garcia, enter Neal Cotts. Then this game turned ugly...natually. Rafael Palmeriro, BJ Surhoff would knock in a run, and Iguchi's error would be costly as another run scored that made it a ugly 4-spot for the Orioles and a 9-5 lead.

In the Sox half of the 8th, AJ Pierzynski hit a home run that made it 9-6, but thats all the Sox could muster up against the AL East leading Orioles and their 15-hit attack. They would lose 9-6 ending their short lived 3-game winning steak infront of 37,311 loud fans at the Cell.

The Sox record falls to 27-10 and Feddy Garcia, who didn't have his best stuff tonight now drops to a even 3-3. No time to cry, Jose Contreras (1-0 3.00ERA) will go against Erik Bedard (3-1 2.60ERA) for the Orioles. Game time is at 2:05.

Ozzieball Update:
Scott Podsednik stole 4 bases for the second time tonight! But the Sox had many opportunities that they never capitalized on.

Scott Podsednik

2-4, steals 4 bases. Too bad he can't pitch.
