Trouble in Tampa

May 9th at Tampa Bay

"Podsednik and Iguchi manufactured all the offense tonight."

Short Take:Sox latest winning streak stopped at 8 as Rays take series opener.

The Sox ran out of magic tonight as they saw their 8 game winning streak snapped at the hands of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays tonight by a 4-2 score. Freddy Garcia got the start against Hideo Nomo. The Sox gave Garcia an early 2-0 lead in the first. Scott Podsednik started the game with a walk, and proceeded to put himself in scoring position with his 17th stolen base of the year. Tadahito Iguchi followed with a double down the rightfield line to score Podsednik and give the Sox a 1-0 lead. Iguchi would later score on a sacrifice fly by Paul Konerko to make the score 2-0. That was pretty much the extent of the Sox offense tonight, unfortunately.

In the 3rd inning, the Sox had an opportunity to blow the game wide open. Juan Uribe led off the inning with a single, and Podsednik followed with a bunt single to put two men on and nobody out. Iguchi would then execute a successful sacrifice bunt, moving the runners to second and third with only one out, and the heart of the batting order coming up. Carl Everett was unable to pad his RBI total as he struck out looking. Konerko would walk to load the bases, but Aaron Rowand would strike out swinging at a pitch in the dirt to end the inning, and the score remained 2-0 Sox.

Garcia would hold the Rays at bay until the bottom of the 4th inning. After Carl Crawford and Aubrey Huff started off the inning with back to back singles, Garcia would get two outs before the Rays would finally break through. Ex-Sox outfielder Chris Singleton would put the Devil Rays on the board with an RBI double, scoring Crawford and cutting the Sox lead to 2-1. Nomo, meanwhile, kept the Sox from doing any further damage until he had to leave the game in the 6th inning with an apparent hamstring injury. Lance Carter would enter in relief of Nomo, and he pitched 3 shutout innings in earning the victory. The Rays took the lead in the bottom of the 6th inning, again doing their damage with two outs. With a man on first and two outs, centerfielder Damon Hollins delivered a double to the left centerfield gap to tie the score at 2. Singleton followed with a single, scoring Hollins and giving Tampa a 3-2 lead. Singleton would advance to third on a two-base error by Jermaine Dye, but he would be stranded there. The Rays would add an insurance run in the 7th, but it wouldn't matter tonight.

After Carter retired 9 Sox in a row, the Rays brought in closer Danys Baez in the 9th. With two outs, Joe Crede singled to bring the tying run to the plate and keep the Sox alive. That glimmer of hope was extinguished when Juan Uribe struck out to end the game and the winning streak.

The Sox will try to start another winning streak tomorrow as Jose Contreras (1-0, 2.60) faces Mark Hendrickson (1-1, 3.55). Gametime is 6:15 pm CDT. The Sox still maintain a 4.5 game lead over Minnesota in the division standings.

WSI's
Ozzieball Update:
Podsednik stole a base which led to a run in the first inning. Sox fail to score in 3rd inning despite putting two runners in scoring position with one out.
