WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

Pierzynski delivers!

May 6, at Toronto

How many Grinders did KW use today:
"We'll say everyone's a grinder today, as every Sox starter got on base and all three pitchers were effective.  Can't complain about wins against the East.  Maybe ESPN will take notice."

Short Take:  Solid outing by Orlando Hernandez nearly wasted as Sox offense stunned by Blue Jay defense until A.J. Pierzynski delivers 2-run single in 8th.

Friday night in Toronto, it looked like the White Sox were ready to waste their first solid start of the year.  Orlando Hernandez gave the Sox 7 strong innings, allowing 3 runs on 6 hits.  However, for most of the game,  the White Sox offense looked dead north of the border, as David Bush and the Toronto defense kept the Sox from breaking the game open.

The Sox did get on the board first in the top of the first, as Tadahito Iguchi singled with an out.  He stole second and advanced to third when Carl Everett hit behind the runner with a groung out to second.  Though Paul Konerko continued his miserable hitless streak, it didn't matter, as Gregg Zaun allowed a passed ball during the at bat to plate Iguchi.

Hernandez retired the first three batters he faced, but the fourth Corey Koskie homered to right field to knot the score at 1.  Shea Hillenbrand then singled to left and moved to third on a single by Gregg Zaun.  A double by Alexis Rios and sacrifice fly by Russ Adams put two runs on the board for Toronto and put the Blue Jays up 3-1.

The very next inning, the Sox cut into Toronto's lead, as Joe Crede scored on a double by Scott Podsednik, but David Bush settled down over the next 2 2/3 innings, only allowing a hit and two walks, and the hit was erased when Juan Uribe was caught stealing at second.

El Duque, meanwhile, had also settled down.  Though he didn't have a 1-2-3 inning until the 6th, Hernandez stayed out of trouble for the rest of the night.  After that 1-2-3 6th, the Sox still owed Hernandez a run to keep his solid outing from going to waste.  Jermaine Dye wasted no time in erasing the deficit, as he led off the 7th with a solo home run to knot the score at 7.  The 8th, however, was the critical inning.  After 1 out, Carl Everett walked and Paul Konerko broke his 0-26 streak with a bloop single to centerfield.  Miguel Batista then came in to try and keep the score tied and got Timo Perez to pop a bunt straight up to first base.  Dye walked ot bring up A.J. Pierzynski, whose had limited success in Canada.  Not this time, though, as A.J. dropped a single right in between short and left field to score Everett and Konerko and give the Sox their first lead of the game since the 2nd inning.

Damaso Marte and Dustin Hermanson relieved Hernandez in the eighth and ninth respectively and both pitched fairly nondramatic innings to seal the Sox's first win against the "beastly" American League East and their 22nd win of the year.  Jon Garland stakes his perfect record tomorrow as he faces off against Ted Lilly at the 'Dome.  Game time is noon (12:07 officially), and the game will be aired on WGN.

Ozzieball Update:  Another day, another clutch hit.  Tonight A.J. Pierzynski places a blooper exactly where it had to be, scoring the decisive 4th and 5th run of the game.  Couple of runners caught stealing tonight, but that's partly to blame on the umpires.
