Cubune outraged over signage! (Sox only)

filed by George Bova

May 5. 2005

In the furthest lowest corner of Thursday's Cubune, you can find an article about the Sox latest victory, their fourth in a row, at Sox Park. However that's not what has Teddy Greenstein worked up. The erstwhile Cubune sportswriter turned "media reporter" has a nice spread on page 2 (complete with accompanying photograph) highlighting the latest outrage at Sox Park.

Yeah Teddy, we hear it's a "dangerous neighborhood," too, but please continue.

According to Teddy, the latest Sox smear against the game of baseball involves the placement of the center field camera at Sox Park. Apparently this upsets Teddy because it was done (GASP!) to better fit the advertising signage behind homeplate onto viewers' television screens. Teddy nearly accuses the Sox of running right-handed hitters completely off the screen but stops short of such nonsense.

Presumably the pixels on the right-hand side of a TV screen are just as viewable as those in the center of the screen? Presumably the nothingness to the right of the hitter is every bit as nothing as the nothing to the left of the hitter, too? Nobody really cares except to see the pitcher, the catcher, the hitter and the umpire, right Teddy?

Teddy ain't sayin'.

Of course what else Teddy isn't saying is that his newspaper, the sister division to the Chicago Cubs, is owned by a parent company that placed a large advertising sign behind the Urinal's homeplate, too. In fact that sign, unlike the one at Sox Park, has come in for criticism around Chicago precisely because it covers up the "hallowed bricks of Chicago's Baseball Shrine," witness to a record amount of losing baseball that draws teary-eyed idiots from as far away as Iowa, riding pilgrim buses to a "not dangerous neighborhood" to be part of the annual Lovable Losers festivities. Just watch out for the rapists.

So WSI is here to let all the Cubune readers know, and Teddy too, that the Sox beat Kansas City 4-2 last night, another record-breaking performance never achieved by any team in the 105 seasons of modern baseball. You can be excused for missing the story. The Cubune and Teddy had their minds on something else.

Completely fair and balanced reporting from at least one outlet in Chicago.
