WSI News - Totally Biased Game Recaps

Eight straight!

April 26 at Oakland

How many Grinders did KW use today:
"Garland, of course, but how about Chris Widger?  Replacing A.J. Pierzynski in the line-up, he hits a 2-run homer in the 6th to put the Sox ahead.  Though Jermaine Dye was less than spectacular against his former team at the plate, he made a real nice, sliding catch in the outfield, and Paul Konerko and Carl Everett get props, each for their 2-out, 2-RBI hits."

Short Take:  Jon Garland outlasts Barry Zito as Sox win on the West Coast, 6-0 over Oakland.

Simply put, Monday's White Sox-Atheltics game can be summed up in a sentence.  Jon Garland outlasted Barry Zito.  Of course, this is simple underanalysis, but no one was more impressive in the Sox's 6-0 victory than the lanky righthander, who simply got stronger as the innings piled, while the 2002 American League Cy Young Award winner simply ran out of gas.

The pair traded impressive innings for the first six frames.  When Aaron Rowand led of the Sox 7th, the Pale Hose had managed to get 6 men on base; three hits, two hit by pitches, and a walk.  Oakland, meanwhile, had managed just three hits.  When Rowand grounded out to start the inning, it looked like more of the same, but as quickly as Zito had dominated the Sox, he just as quickly fell apart.  After Juan Uribe singled to right field, Chris Widger came to the plate, the back-up catcher who won his job in Spring Training now starting for the injured A.J. Pierzynski.  Widger only responded by lining a laser home run over the left field wall to plate the first two runs of the game.  Now fazed, Zito gave up back-to-back singles to Joe Crede and Pablo Ozuna before getting Tadahito Iguchi to fly out and getting one out from ending the inning.  But Carl Everett ensured that would not happen, as a he laced a double down the left field line to plate two and put the Sox up 4-0.

Meanwhile, Jon was lights out.  Mark Scutaro's double in the bottom of the fifth with two outs was the last time the A's would reach base, as Garland retired the final 13 batters he faced.  He recieved two more insurance runs in the top of the ninth when a two-out double by Paul Konerko scored Widger and Ozuna, but didn't need them.  He was just simply fantastic, as he turned in his second career shutout, ending the night with 4 hits, a walk, and three strikeouts.  With the win, he now has four on the year, joining Seattle's Jamie Moyer, Florida's Dontrelle Willis, and Philadelphia's Jon Lieber, to tie for the MLB-lead.  His ERA also dropped to 1.80, fourth best in the American League.

With a win in Oakland under their belt, the Sox will send ace Mark Buehrle to the hill tomorrow.  He will be opposed by Rich Harden, who has only allowed one run in 20.1 IP this year for an A.L.-best 0.44 ERA.  Pull up a chair, it should be a good one.  Game time is 9:05 PM Central Time and it will be broadcast locally on WCIU.

Ozzieball Update:
Offense looked a bit sluggish in the first six innings, but when your starter is just on top of his game, you can afford to wait a few innings.   Carl Everett and Paul Konerko comin' up big, each with a 2-out, 2-RBi hit in the game.
