Garcia settles on the reservation

April 11 at Indians

How many Grinders did KW use today:
"Cold temps won't stop Pods and Ozuna from stealing some bases, Everett & Crede with RBIs, and Garcia dominates Indians."

Short Take: Sox spoil another opening day, this time it's the Indians. Ozzie's "smart ball" backs Freddy Garcia's dominating pitching for a 2-1 win.

Freddy Garcia and Kevin Millwood would battle again less than a week from the matchup at the cell. Again, Millwood is proving to be a big pickup for the Indians as he looked better than he did last Wednesday, but Freddy Garcia also looked better than he did last week. Garcia retired the last 14 batters he faced and held the Indians to only one run at Jacobs Field on the Indian's home opener. The Indians would get that run in the 3rd inning. Coco Crisp advanced to second base when Scott Podsednik threw out Ronnie Belliard at third base while trying to get there from first. Travis Hafner singled on a ground ball to center and Coco Crisp scored to make it a 1-0 Indians lead.

From the 4th inning on Freddy Garcia would shut down the "offensive machine" known as the Cleveland Indians and the Sox bats finally came out after being shut out by Indians starter Kevin Millwood. Sox hitters looked stupid for the first 5 innings of today's game and it looked like Garcia's pitching would go to waste. Look again. After wasting a chance to score in the 5th, the Sox would not let Millwood off the hook in the 6th. Scott Podsednik lead off and made a horrible bunt that luckily went over the head of Millwood. Podsednik stole second base and scored on Mr. Clutch Carl Everett's line drive single to right field to tie the game 1-1.

In the 7th with 2 outs, Chris Widger got his first hit in his Sox uniform and moved to third on Joe Crede's single. Yes, you heard me, I said Joe Crede's single. Podsednik then singled to center which scored Widger to make it a 2-1 Sox lead.

Garcia worked a 1-2-3 8th and finished the afternoon with 8 strong innings giving up 4 hits, 1 run (earned), 2 walks, and 4 K's. Ozzie gave the ball to Marte in the 9th to close it out. Marte got strike out king Jose Hernandez to pop out, but walked Travis Hafner. Victor Martinez batted next and flew out. Ozzie didn't like the Marte/Aaron Boone matchup so it was time for Shingo to come in which had Sox fans reaching for their TUMS. Thankfully they wern't needed as Boone strikes out swinging to end the game for a 2-1 Sox win!

The win puts the Sox at a record of 5-2 and the Indians fall to 3-4. The Sox have a off day tomorrow and the series will continue Wednesday as Jose Contreras (0-0, 1.50ERA) will make his second start of '05 while Cliff Lee (0-0 13.50ERA) will throw for the Indians. Wednesday's game first pitch is at 6:05pm and will be on Comcast Sports Net.

NOTE* Scott Podsednik left the game after the top half of the 7th with a unknown injury at press time. Hopefully its not a serious problem and the day off will get Pods all rested up!

Ozzieball Update:
Hit & Run failed in the 5th, Pods & Ozuna steal some bases, leads to a run, Awful bunts by Podsednik and Ozuna but Podsednik's went over the head of Millwood. We'll take it!
