What A Difference A Day Makes!

April 8 at Twins

How many Grinders did KW use today:
"Podsednik swipes 2 bases and is caught once, Rowand makes a sacrifice bunt, and "El Duque" gets grinder status for throwing a good game in his new pinstripes."

Short Take:  No meltdowns today as the Sox spoil the Twins home opener with a 5-1 win.

A day after the Sox watched their 3rd win for the 2005 season get batted around in extra innings by the Indians, the Sox hoped to spoil the 3-time AL Central Division Champion Minnesota Twins home opener. Our Sox were up to the challange as Orlando Hernandez shut the Twins down and the Sox bats came alive in the garbage dome. The Sox drew first blood in the first inning off Twins starter Kyle Lohse when Willie Harris singled to right field and Carl Everett doubled to center under the glove of the diving Shannon Stewart which would let Harris score from first base.

The Twins couldn't get anything going against Hernandez, their lone run would come in the third inning when Michael Cuddyer would lead off the inning with a single and would advance to second on a Luis Rivas single. "El Duque" would get Shannon Stewart to ground into a double play which would bring Cuddyer to third. Jason Bartlett would then double to right field and Cuddyer would score to tie the game up 1-1.

The game would stayed tied until the 6th. Carl Everett would lead off and pop out, but Paul Konerko would launch his 2nd home run off the season off Lohse who he was 3 for 37 off of before the game started. Not bad eh? That would make it a 2-1 Sox lead, but the Sox train kept going. Jermaine Dye would single and the next batter Aaron Rowand would crank out his first home run of the season to make it a 4-1 Sox lead.

The Orlando Hernandez we all hope to see in '05 would stay in cruise control tonight and kept the "big inning" in Tucson. He kept the Twins hitters off balance all night. He retired his last seven batters he faced and went 7 innings giving up 6 hits, 1 run, no walks, and would strike out 5.

The bullpen was ready to take over, so, after yesterday, the Sox thought another run couldn't hurt. Joe "Cy" Mays came in to pitch for the Twins in the 7th and would face Juan Uribe. Uribe lined one over the fence in left field, but Stewart would make a great play bringing the ball back for an out. Podsednik would then single and steal second during Everett's at bat. Everett would then double to left and Podsednik would score to make it a 5-1 Sox lead.

Dustin Hermanson enters in the 8th and shows us that he will be a big part of the new and improved Sox bullpen as he would pitch flawlessly only giving up a pair of hits and three strikeouts in his two innings of work.

Notice how nowhere in here it says Torii "We're not afraid of the Sox anymore" Hunter scored or homered or took away a home run. Public Enemy #1 would go 0-4 and the only smile he would show is when his name would be announced during the opening lineups.

The first game of this three game series would go to the Sox as they win 5-1. This ups the Sox record to 3-1 and the Twins now fall to 2-2. Tomorrow, Jon Garland makes his first start of 2005 and Brad Radke (0-1) will make the start for the Twins. First pitch is at 6:10pm and the game will be on Comcast Sports Net.

Ozzieball Update:
A sac bunt by Rowand to move Dye to second works, and Podsednik steals two bases to bring his season total to three. But, three of the five runs came via the long ball.
