Welcome Back Baseball!

by Ganman

Many Sox fans have a tailgating ritual for the home opener.  Here's mine.

My friend called me on my cell Friday afternoon to remind me of something I knew months ago:  We're tailgating on Opening Day.

I already know the ritual.  I'll arrive at my friend's house around 9:30 (for a 2:05 game!!).The car will be packed and ready to go.  He drives to all the games.  His sense of direction is flawless, mine is clueless.  His car, nicknamed "Scooby" after that cartoon canine Scooby Doo, can sense where we're going.  At least it seems like it.

Once we arrive, we'll enter off 35th St. Our parking lot guy, T-Bone, will see the green pass on the driver's side windshield and wave us in. Later,we'll ask him over for a burger or a dog or I'll walk over to his post with a bottle of water.  We'll park and set up camp.  Out comes the smokey joe type grill, the cooler, our 2 chairs and most important, the flags, which will be mounted and flown from metal poles.  We assemble the poles first. They screw into 2 metal plates that my friend mounts underneath his rear tires.  One flag is the American flag, the other a Sox flag.

Next, we begin unpacking the cooler we brought. My friend will bring brats and chicken wings to grill and beer (or soda) to drink. Me, I'll stick with my burgers and cans of caffeine free Diet Coke.  Along with chips, Cheetos (puffs, my fave) and pretzels, we'll indulge in this carbohydrate nightmare.  I'll wage a losing battle with the scale till I'm blue in the face; my friend is skinny as a bird.

Soon enough, our tailgate partner will show up with a ton of food and drinks as well.  He offers both to us.  My friend bows out politely, I can't refuse an extra kosher dog or polish sausage.  By now it's probably almost 1:00.  The game starts at 2:05.  The gates are open.  After telling our tailgate partner we'll catch up with him later, the flags are taken down and we enter the park. We walk to the 100 level and the scent of grilled onions and kosher hot dogs hits my nostrils.  Yes, those are what baseball is all about for me.  Kosher hot dogs (with onions), Sportschip oatmeal raisin cookies (I always buy 2.  One is never enough) and later when summer comes, vanilla/chocolate ice cream cones.

Once we reach the 100 level, it's off to the gift shop.My friend might buy a jersey, a bobblehead or some other knick knack.   I'll buy a newborn Sox uni for my cousin's first child, a son, who was born Friday night.

About 15 minutes before game time, we'll take our seats and look over the field.  If we're sitting in end seats, he'll take the one on the outside, I'll take the one on the inside. Then, once the national anthem's been sung, the moment we've waited for since November comes to fruition; baseball 2005.

Welcome back, baseball. It's been a long offseason, and I can only hope the Sox will prove all critics wrong and win the AL Central.  Along the way I think I'll have another kosher dog and a Sportschip oatmeal raisin cookie.
