Under the Radar!

by Sox Fan #029

"As the 2005 season draws near, White Sox fans are very confident about what the man formerly known as Professor Chaos has done to the team this off-season.  Most of us think that this has been Kenny Williams best off-season as our general manager. And yet, the national media is not impressed. Why is this? What do we see that they do not? The question we really should be asking is what did we see that they did not?

The answer to that question, of course, would be the 2001-2004 Sox seasons.  In each of these campaigns, the formula going in was the same. Halfway decent pitching was to get the job done adequately, while the big boppers were supposed to violently slash the path to the division title. Sadly, as you know, it didn't work. And the media evidently weren't watching.

2001 began with as much hope as any summer since 1994.  Coming off a division title, the Sox seemed prime to repeat their 2000 success, having added a veteran presence in pitcher David Wells. This team failed. The core of the team? Lee, Ordonez, Thomas, Konerko, and Valentin.

2002 was no different. The big pitching acquisition was Todd Ritchie, another disappointment, and the Sox went down again, with the Twins taking their first ever AL Central title. The core of the team? Lee, Ordonez, Thomas, Konerko, and Valentin.

2003 brought Bartolo Colon and Billy Koch. Colon pitched well, but Koch bombed, Konerko faltered, and Jerry Manuel was fired for his tinkering and seeming indifference. The core of the team? Lee, Ordonez, Thomas, Konerko, and Valentin.

And of course, the most recent failure, 2004, the season for which Kenny Williams seemed least prepared. Ozzie Guillen was our new manager, fresh from the NL, preaching smallball. Then Thomas and Ordonez went down, the Sox went on a 7 game skid in August, and things were never the same. The core of the team?

Well...you know.

Now Kenny has finally done away with that core, keeping only Thomas and Konerko. He has built the team around Ozzieball, adding speed all around, greatly improving the pitching staff, and hoping that Ozzie can put his preaching into practice. Why again do we get no respect?  Under the radar seems to be the idea we Sox fans have. And yet, how can so-called experts seriously predict a 3rd or 4th place finish when Kenny has unequivocally rectified all the criticisms that have been made about the last three Sox teams?

The answer lies in our perception and knowledge of this team. Fans who have lived and died with the Sox their entire lives know why they haven't succeeded since 2000. Due to the fact that they pay no attention to the South-siders, the media are failing to notice a change. Sure, they know everything about the Cubs, Yankees and Red Sox, but until they do some meaningful analysis on some other teams, they should stop claiming to have omniscience over the baseball world.
