Reinsdorf still clueless?

filed by George Bova

March 5. 2005

In a radio interview earlier this week, Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf expressed personal satisfaction with the direction his team has taken this off-season, an opinion probably shared by most Sox Fans who support his team. The Sox will look very different in 2005 so hopes this spring are especially high on the South Side.

More worrisome was Reinsdorf's opinions about why previous Sox teams failed, essentially blaming former manager Jerry Manuel's preference for the power game as the problem why the Sox didn't win anymore than one division championship in his six years as Sox manager. Both general manager Kenny Williams and manager Ozzie Guillen have repeated this same line this winter, too, citing the lack of accomplishment by the 2004 team in the win column in spite of their impressive home run total.

Can the Sox owner and his minions truly be this clueless about the lack of pitching depth that doomed those Sox teams?

The Sox didn't lose because they hit too many home runs. They lost because the Sox were running guys like Scott Schoenweis, Danny Wright, and Jason Grilli to the mound two out of every five days! The top and bottom of the line up was horrible, too. How stupid do the Sox think we Sox Fans are?

The 2005 Sox team offers hope not because of Ozzie's managerial acumen, or Scott Podsednik's basestealing ability, or even the allegedly tighter glovework our team's defense possesses. These details won't make a hill of beans difference compared to pitching depth we Sox Fans haven't seen on the South Side since 1994.

Jerry Reinsdorf's comments only serve to reinforce a long-running viewpoint that the problem with the Sox franchise starts with the man sitting in the chairman's seat.
