El Caballo too wussy?

filed by George Bova

January 17,2005

It was during a Q and A session at SoxFest that manager Ozzie Guillen suggested Carlos Lee might have been traded for a play he didn't make last July 26.  This was the game when Minnesota's Torii Hunter went out of his way to take out Sox catcher Jamie Burke.  Ozzie claimed a chance to retaliate for Torii Hunter punk-like attitude was missed later in that same game when Lee didn't take a hard slide into second base, instead sliding "like his wife were turning the double play."

Well, maybe that's true.  Ozzie is certainly entitled to his opinion.

We're entitled to our opinion, too.  Ozzie was a bench player for the Braves back in 2000.  He wasn't around to see what every Sox Fan remembers from that season like it was only yesterday:  the April fight with Phil Garner's Tigers.

Ozzie was getting splinters in the seat of his shorts somewhere in an N.L. ballpark that April afternoon when the Chicago White Sox went to war.  And the biggest belligerent wearing the silver and black that afternoon was Carlos Lee.  He was trying to break in half any Tiger within his reach and it took several teammates to restrain him near second base.  There is a memorable picture of Lee with a torn shirt somewhere inside the mighty archives of White Sox Interactive.  We remember it well.

We'll also remember Lee as the guy who hated being booed and made it his mission to become a more solid defensive ballplayer just to shut up the losers seated in left field inside the HumpDome.  We'll remember Lee a fighter and anything but wussy on the field.

And we'll remember Ozzie needs to find a better excuse...  WSI readers are smarter than the ones who got Ozzie's version of events reading the Cubune.
