Ending on a High Note

October 3 at Kansas City

"More questions than answers right now. Magglio, get well soon and hope to see you back in the Silver and Black next season."

Short Take:Jose Contreras dominates the Royals as the White Sox end the 2004 campaign with a 5-0 shutout victory.

Finally, it is officially over.

The White Sox ended a disappointing season this afternoon in Kansas City, going out with a decisive 5-0 win over the Royals. Jose Contreras provided what is hopefully a window into his future potential with 8 shutout innings. The Royals did not manage a hit off Contreras until second baseman Ruben Gotay singled to lead off the bottom of the 7th.

On the offensive side of the ledger, the Sox started off with a little smallball to get on the board. Willie Harris led off the game with a single, and Juan Uribe followed with a bunt single. After Carlos Lee flew out to move Harris to third, Royals starter Zack Greinke walked Paul Konerko to load the bases. Ross Gload, AL Rookie of the Month of September, hit a sacrifice fly to right and Harris scored to put the Sox up 1-0. The Sox added to their lead in the 4th, starting the inning off with three consecutive hits. Gload doubled, Joe Crede singled, and Joe Borchard hit an RBI single to score Gload and put the Sox up 2-0. Borchard would later hit a solo homer in the 8th and went 3-4 on the day with two RBI. Still in the 4th, Crede would score on a groundout by shortstop Wilson Valdez which made the score 3-0 Sox.

Contreras continued to own the Royals. After a two out walk to Joe Randa in the first, the Royals would not get another baserunner until Gotay's single to break up the no-no in the 7th. The Royals had a bit of a threat going when Matt Stairs hit a one-out single to put runners on the corners and the tying run at the plate in the person of big Calvin Pickering. Contreras induced a double play to end the inning and preserve the shutout. The Sox came back in the 8th with two more runs, the homer by Borchard and an RBI single for Harris. Contreras pitched a scoreless 8th inning to finish his season. Shingo Takatsu came out to pitch the 9th inning and preserve the shutout victory.

And so it ends. The White Sox end the season with an 83-79 record, good for second place in the AL Central. In a roller-coaster of a season marked by injury and unfulfilled promise, many changes seem to loom on the horizon. Should provide for an offseason of much debate amongst Sox faithful. Opening Day, 2005 has been announced. For the first time in it's history, US Cellular Field will play host to an Opening Day contest. The White Sox will begin their quest for Major League supremacy in 2005 on Monday, April 4 against the Cleveland Indians at USCF. It will break a string of 14 straight road openers for the Pale Hose. Keep the faith, and Go Sox! in 2005.

Ozzieball Update:
Much of the same 'ol, same 'ol in 2004--poor execution, poor fundamentals, too much dependence on the long ball. Ozzie talks the talk, now he needs to walk the walk. Should be an interesting offseason indeed.
