"Maggs watches the Cubs choke away their spot in the playoffs."

Short Take: Royals pour it on as season wears down

With just 2 games left on their schedule, Sox fans knew that with the way things have gone this long season, there was at least one more opportunity for an inferior opponent to light them up and make them look awful. That opponent came in the form of Tony Pena's cellar-dwelling Kansas City Royals, who jump all voer the Sox on their way to a 10-2 victory at Kaufmann Stadium.

Jason Grilli got the start for the Sox penultimate game of the season, and pretty much turned in a performance worthy of a Sox fifth starter, letting the Royals jump all over him and score six runs, fueled by a Calvin "I Only Hit Against Chicago" Pickering home run and a Ruben Gotay 2-run triple. Grilli gave way in the fourth to Arnie Munoz, who held his own until the fifth inning when Angel Berroa and Gotay both took him deep. Scott Schoeneweis makes his first appearance since early August and looks just like the pre-DL Schoeneweis, giving up 3 hits and a run in his inning of work. Jeff Bajenaru finally comes on for the last 2 innings in mop-up duty and keeps the Royals off the board.

Who knows where the Sox offense was tonight. The "Hit Men" tap out 7 hits, but only score 2 runs both on solo homers. Aaron Rowand gave the Sox the lead in the first with a blast, and Jose Valentin cracks what very well may be his last long ball in a Sox uniform. Other than that, nothing to see here, folks.

The Sox 2004 campaign comes mercifully to a close tomorrow afternoon at 1:10 CDT, with Jose Contreras facing Zack Greinke. Hopefully, we'll finish on an up note.
