Playing In October

"Spent the night watching Ichiro set the record for hits in a season."

Short Take:  Garland pitches 6 strong innings against the pathetic Royals to end his own mediocre season.

So it’s not exactly what Sox fans had hoped for, but on Friday the Sox played a game in October. Granted it didn’t exactly have any big implications, but the Sox 4-2 win clinched them second place. The general White Sox fan reaction, “Who cares?” Second place, third place, fourth place, or fifth place, the results are still the same… another year with no playoff appearance meaning yet another year with no World Series Championship.

Friday was the last start of the year for Jon Garland. He had a chance at having his first winning record in 5 years with a win. Early on it seemed like this would be another inconsistent start by Garland. He allowed a leadoff double in the bottom of the 1st inning and after retiring the next hitter, he proceeded to walk the following 2 hitters. A fielder’s choice gave the Royals one run, but Garland avoided further damage by inducing a ground ball that he fielded for the third out. Garland loaded the bases in the 2nd inning but was able to get out of the inning unscathed. He would settle down after that. For a while however, it appeared that Garland wasn’t going to receive any run support. The 6th inning changed that. With 2 outs in the 6th inning, Carlos Lee doubled and Paul Konerko singled to score Lee. Konerko’s 116 RBI tied the game up. After a Ross Gload walk, Joe Crede doubled to left to score Konerko, though Gload was thrown out at home. Nonetheless, the Sox had taken a 2-1 lead. But could Garland hold that lead?

It didn’t take Garland long to let the Royals get back in the game. He walked the leadoff man in the bottom of the 6th inning. After a sacrifice and a fly out moved the runner to 3rd base with 2 outs, Alberto Castillo would single to score the run. Garland’s day was done after the 6th but the Sox had a half inning to give him a chance for the win. They did so with a 2-run 7th inning. Joe Borchard and Ben Davis walked with 1 out before a Juan Uribe pinch hit single. With 2 outs and the bases loaded, one run scored and the runners advanced on a wild pitch. The Royals decided to put Carlos Lee on base and face Konerko. That proved to be a bad idea when Royals pitcher Matt Kinney threw 4 balls to Konerko to force in another run. Damaso Marte and Jon Adkins each pitched a scoreless inning before Shingo Takatsu got a chance to pick up a save in the 9th inning. Shingo allowed a one out hit before rolling up a 6-4-3 double play to end the game. In wrapping up the Sox 4-2 victory, Shingo recorded his 19th save.

Only 2 more games left for the Sox as players look to make impressions for next year and accomplish individual goals for this year. Jason Grilli gets one final shot to make his impression this year when he faces Brian Anderson at 6:10 CDT tomorrow.

Ozzieball Update:
A few 2-out RBI, and a little patience at the plate results in enough runs to win. A little late season Ozzieball.
