Buehrle cruises in final start

September 30, at Kansas City

Days left on the DL:
Spring 2005
Number of special newspaper articles covering it:

"Maggs stays away from team bus for fear of being shot. Anyone think that if that happened outside of the Cell it would be all over CNN, Fox News, ESPN, Telemundo, and the BBC? Of course it would."

Short Take: Sox play well again in utterly meaningless win as Buehrle cruises for 9 innings and offense slaps KC around for 12 hits and 9 runs.

Thursday night’s game was as meaningless as they come as the Sox traveled to Kansas City to close out the regular season for two of the biggest busts in 2004. But for Mark Buehrle, Thursday had to be a bit special, as the Sox lefty made his final appearance of 2004 and dominated one more time as the Sox routed the Royals, 9-2.

It was the culmination of a great year for Buehrle. First and foremost he cemented his name in White Sox lore, as the complete game pushed him to 245 1/3 innings of work on the season, 3 1/3 more than Bartolo Colon’s single season franchise record set last year. Aside from that, Mark finished a great year on a great note; going at least 6 innings in his 28th consecutive start (the last time Mark did not pitch at least 6 frames was May 5 in Baltimore). The 2-run effort dropped his season ERA under 4 for the third time in his career, and he won his 16th game of the year, tied for his second winningest season (19 in 2002, 16 in 2001).

He did fall behind early, however. After the Sox meekly started against Chris George, the Royals struck first, as a lead off double and one-out single manifested into a pair of runs on a fielder’s choice and 2-out double.

The Sox, however, would not let their ace down this evening. Juan Uribe homered to lead off the fourth and cut the deficit in half. After Buehrle sliced through the Royals for the third time in four innings, Juan Uribe again provided the spark, singling to right to score Jamie Burke who led off the inning with a walk.

Though Joe Borchard gave Buehrle the lead he’d never relinquish in the 7th with a solo home run, the Sox blew this one open an inning later. With Mark firmly in control, and the Sox only mildly threatening with Joe Crede on 2nd and 2 out in the 8th when Jamie Burke started the chain by singling in Crede to extend the Sox’s lead to 2. After Joe Borchard was intentionally walked, Willie Harris got a pinch hit RBI single to score Burke. Borchard and Harris both scored then on Aaron Rowand’s 3-run bomb that all but sealed the deal.

Paul Konerko doubled home Carlos Lee in the 9th to put the final nail in the coffin, but the way Buehrle pitched, the game was over long before the Sox took the lead. It was just a matter of when, not if, the White Sox would walk away with their 81st win of the season, ensuring that for the fifth straight year, the Sox will finish .500 or above. The last time the Sox had a run like that was between 1990-1994, but the last time the feat was accomplished in five consecutive full seasons was between 1963-1967 (the Sox never finished better than 2nd in that run, however).

As for the Sox and Royals, they play the 2nd of their 4-game season-ending series tomorrow. Jon Garland makes his final start for the Pale Hose against Denny Bautista. The game will be aired on Fox Sports Net and game time is 7:10 PM.

Ozzieball Update:
Three homers and a complete game from your ace? Hard to lose on those days.
