"Keeping himself in game shape by putting up and taking down hurricane shutters."

Short Take:Garland turns in one of his strongest outings of the season as Sox play longball and beat the Royals 5-1 in 2004 home finale.

Jon Garland pitched 8 1/3 solid innings and the Sox hit 4 solo home runs off Brian Anderson as the Sox close out the home slate with a victory.

Garland evened his record to 11-11 on the season, one which has mirrored that of the White Sox, marked with many ups and downs and overall ending in mediocrity. But today was his day. His only mistake came in the top of the 5th inning, when Calvin Pickering led off with a solo blast to cut the Sox lead in half at that point. The Sox got on the board first. Ross Gload hit a solo home run in the bottom of the second to lead off the scoring, and in the third Aaron Rowand singled and scored on a Juan Uribe double.

After surrendering the home run to Pickering, Garland did not allow another hit until the 9th inning, retiring 12 of the next 13 batters. The Sox continued to tee off on Anderson. With two outs in the bottom of the 5th, Wilson Valdez homered, the first of his major league career. The solo shot put the Sox up 3-1. Jose Valentin and Joe Borchard hit back-to-back homers in the 7th inning to close out the scoring at 5-1.

Garland started the 9th inning, but after a leadoff walk and a single, he gave way to Damaso Marte with men on second and third and one out. Marte retired the next two batters to earn his 6th save of the season and preserve the win. The Sox improved their record to (79-76) in taking 3 out of 4 from the Royals in the last home series of the year. The Sox end the year with three games in Detroit, followed by four in Kansas City. The next game is tomorrow night, at 6:05 pm CDT from Comerica Park. Jason Grilli (2-1, 7.29) goes for the Sox against Gary Knotts (5-6, 5.65).

Ozzieball Update:
Do solo home runs count as *smallball* ? Because there were four of those.
