Packing It In

September 20th vs Minnesota

Magglio Watch
Days left on the DL:
Spring 2005
Number of special newspaper articles covering it:

"Magglio hasn't been available for comment so he has had no chance to call the Twins overrated."

Short Take:  Buehrle gets slapped around while the Twins celebrate their division title at the Cell.

If there’s one way to officially end your season in embarrassing fashion, it’s by letting your division rival clinch the division on your own home turf. But starter Mark Buehrle wasn’t planning on letting that happen. After spewing some garbage a few days ago about the Twins being overrated, Buehrle decided to speak out about his plans to prevent the Twins from celebrating on the field at U.S. Cellular. In typical White Sox fashion, after running his mouth, he failed to back up anything he said. Unfortunately this is something Sox fans have been treated to far too many times over the past few years. Hopefully Ozzie made the Sox players watch the Twins celebration as a reminder of what they have failed to accomplish the past 4 years. On the bright side, only a few more weeks before Sox fans get treated to more foolish comments from Sox players running their mouth about a team they’ve cowered to since 2000. The Sox 8-2 beat down at the hands of the Twins finished off the season long beat down the Sox have put their fans through.

Buehrle got off to a fantastic start, walking the leadoff man. After getting a fielder’s choice, Buehrle backed up his comments about the Twins by…..allowing a 2-run homer to Tor-I-I Hunter. Way to back up your statements. After a double by Matthew LeCroy, Buehrle would surrender yet another 2-run home run to the “overrated” Twins, this one off the bat of Corey Koskie. But Buehrle wasn’t done giving up homers. Next he decided to allow one of perhaps the worst Twin not named Jose Offerman. That’s right, Henry Blanco took Buehrle deep. It got even better later. The 5th inning started with a leadoff single followed by a double. Amazingly, Buehrle only allowed one run to score. That run scored on a fielder’s choice with the bases loaded. Buehrle recorded the 3rd out by picking off Corey Koskie to avoid even more damage. As if allowing Henry Blanco to homer wasn’t bad enough, Buehrle decided to give up a home run to a guy with even less power, Luis Rivas. That came leading off the 9th inning before Buehrle was finally yanked. Jeff Bajenaru came on and loaded the bases before walking a run in. He managed to finish off the 9th with only 1 run allowed.

As for the Sox offense, well, it was pretty much non-existent. The Sox got their lone runs on a meaningless Jose Valentin 2-run home run in the 7th inning. Ross Gload had singled before Valentin. It was Valentin’s first home run since August 9th, and hopefully his last as a White Sox. The Sox managed 8 hits on the night, but only twice did they record two hits in the same inning. The other occurrence came in the 6th inning with 2 outs. Aaron Rowand and Carlos Lee both singled before Paul Konerko grounded into a fielder’s choice. Another lackluster performance against the Twins gives the Sox 7 straight losses against their AL Central rivals.

With their season officially over, the Sox are playing simply for pride (if they have any left) at this point. Jon Garland tries not to get crushed tomorrow when he faces off against Terry Mulholland. The game is scheduled to start at 7:05 CDT.

Ozzieball Update:
Sandy Alomar makes what might be his final start behind the plate, at least for the White Sox that is. Ross Gload picks up another start at 1st base as Ozzie perhaps continues to evaluate his options for next year.
