Soggy But Successful!

Short Take:  Sox win behind a stellar outing by Jose Contreras and some timely hitting.

Rain Delays. No team likes them and no team seems to fair worse after rain delays than the White Sox. So when Saturdayís game didnít start until a 2 hour 26 minute rain delay ended, Sox fans couldnít help but feel a little worse about the Sox chances in this game. Combine that with the fact that the Sox struggle against lefties and had to face left-hander Cliff Lee in this game, and the Sox chances didnít look too good in this game. But Sox starter Jose Contreras brought his ďAĒ game today. Contreras picked up his 12th win (4th as a Sox) in a 5-3 win by pitching 6 and 2/3 innings and only allowing a run. But this game didnít finish without some drama.

The drama didnít come until he 9th inning. Both teams went scoreless through the first 4 innings despite a few errors by the Sox, including a throwing error by Contreras. But Contreras pitched around the errors and blanked the Indians through 5 innings. The Sox offense finally managed to put something together in the top of the 5th inning. Joe Crede started the rally with a 1 out double. Two batters later Aaron Rowand walked with 2 outs and the Sox had a threat. Juan Uribe didnít waste the opportunity to bring in a run. He singled to center and the first run scored. The next batter, Paul Konerko, opened up the game when he hit a 3-run homer to right that just cleared the wall. The Sox added one more run in the 6th inning. Ross Gload walked before Ben Davis doubled and the Sox once again had a scoring threat. This time they could only get one run though thanks to a Joe Crede single.

The Indians finally got to Contreras in the bottom portion of the 6th inning. They managed to score 1 run to cut the lead to 5-1 but the game didnít get serious until long after Contreras left. Damaso Marte cruised through an inning and a 1/3 to get to the 9th inning. But up 4 runs, Ozzie decided to go with Jon Adkins to try to end the game. It was a move that didnít work too well. Adkins struck out the first hitter he saw but then proceeded to give up back-to-back home runs. With the score now 5-3, Ozzie went to Shingo to end the game. Shingo retired the first batter he saw before the next two batters reached base for Matt Lawton. That brought up a situation that Sox fans were too familiar with. Flashback to August 7th at U.S. Cellular. The Sox were up 5-3 in the 9th inning with 2 men on and Matt Lawton at the plate. Lawton got a pitch he liked and drove it over the center field wall for a 3-run HR and Shingoís first blown save. But this time was different. Shingo got his revenge on Lawton by striking him out to end the game and nail down the Sox 5-3 victory.

The Sox finish off this 4 game set and look to gain sole possession of 2nd place in a 12:05 CDT start. Jon Garland will throw for the Sox against Scott Elarton of the Indians.

Ozzieball Update:
Carlos Lee continues to sit but Ross Gload gets on base twice in place of Lee.
