There Goes the Winning Streak...

August 25th at Detroit

Short Take:  A 3-run 9th inning rally makes this game seem closer than it really was.

The Sox had a rare opportunity entering Wednesdayís game against the Tigers. They had the chance to win back-to-back games, something that they had only managed to do twice in the past 4 weeks. The right man was on the mound for the Sox to try to push their winning streak to an incredible 2 games. Mark Buehrle toed the rubber looking for his 12th win on the year. But despite a 9th inning rally, the Sox were outplayed in losing 5-4.

The game started off slow for both sides. Detroit starter Nate Robertson and Buehrle dueled early on with neither team scoring a run for the first 3 innings. But the 4th inning ended the shutout for each team. The Sox 4th inning started with a base hit off the bat of Carl Everett. He moved over on a sacrifice and came around to score on a Joe Borchard single. The Sox took the first lead, but it didnít last long. The Tigers started their scoring with a leadoff single of their own from Rondell White. The next hitter doubled to put runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs. Two batters later Marcus Thames singled home both runners with the second runner being called safe on a close play at home. Unfortunately the Tigers scoring didnít stop there. They added another run in the 5th inning which started with a leadoff triple from Carlos Guillen. Guillen later homered for the Tigers 4th run. ďVeteran presenceď Mike Jackson allowed the Tigers 5th and final run in the 8th inning, and it turned out to be a big run.

The Sox actually showed a little life in the 9th inning. Facing Tigers closer Ugueth Urbina, the Sox managed to put a couple runs up, though not enough to win. Timo Perez led off with a base hit and moved to second on Joe Borchardís 1 out walk. With 2 outs, Aaron Rowand smashed the first pitch he saw to left field for a 3-run home run. That made the score 5-4, but thatís all the Sox could manage. Juan Uribe struck out to end the game and end any hope of a comeback win.

Despite only scoring 1 run through 8 innings, the Sox did manage to record 10 hits. Paul Konerko and Joe Crede were the only two Sox players not to reach base. The bullpen didnít help much either. Buehrle left after 6 innings having allowed 3 runs on 8 hits and a walk while striking out 4. Cliff Politte allowed the 4th run to score before Mike Jackson allowed the 5th run to score. Those 2 runs proved to be the difference in this 5-4 loss.

The Sox finish off this road trip with a 4 game series with the Cleveland Indians. Josh Stewart makes his second start of the year against Chad Durbin of the Injuns. The game is scheduled to start at 6:05 CDT.

Ozzieball Update:
Forget the smallball, maybe Ozzie can work with the team (read: Joe Crede) on putting a tag down.
