Garcia Gets Rocked

August 17th vs Detroit

"After hearing about Ozzie being hospitalized, Maggs gives his skip a call to discuss their aches and pains."

Short Take:  Garcia's worst start as a White Sox proves to be costly.

The White Sox returned home on Tuesday which could only mean one thing. Bad weather was on the way. Sure enough, the black cloud hovering over the Sox poured more rain on U.S. Cellular field before the start of Tuesday’s game. The rain led to a delay of an hour and two minutes. Any fan who stayed to watch the game deserved a refund after the game they saw. Freddy Garcia started the game for the Sox and put together his worst start in a White Sox uniform. Garcia lasted just 4 and 1/3 innings while allowing 9 runs on 11 hits. But the Sox weren’t completely dominated in this one. Instead they teased Sox fans again, making the fans believe they were still in the game only to find a way to make sure they lost. They went on to lose this game by a final of 11-8.

The game started off on the wrong foot for the Sox. Garcia allowed a leadoff home run to Omar Infante to give the Tigers the quick 1-0 lead. The 2nd inning made it even worse. With runners on 1st and 2nd and 0 outs, Garcia allowed a 3-run blast to Bobby Higginson. But the Sox didn’t go away easily. In the 3rd inning they struck back to close the gap. Ben Davis led off the inning with a solo homer. A single, an error, and a sacrifice led to runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out. Carlos Lee proceeded to walk to load the bases and Paul Konerko’s walk forced in a run. Carl Everett made good contact but just missed a Grand Slam. Instead he hit a sacrifice fly that scored another run to cut the Tigers lead to 4-3. Before Sox fans could even say, “We’re back in this game,” Freddy allowed another home run to Bobby Higginson. This one of the 2-run variety extended the Tigers lead back to 6-3. Another Tigers run scored on a leadoff home run in the 5th inning. But what happened after that proved to be very costly. Neal Cotts relieved Garcia with 1 out. Cotts struck out the first hitter he saw before uncorking 3, yes 3, wild pitches. The wild pitches allowed 2 runs to score and gave the Tigers a 9-3 lead. However, the Sox weren’t done toying with Sox fans emotions quite yet.

In the bottom of the 6th inning the game became more interesting. A walk and two singles loaded the bases for the Sox with just 1 out. A double past 3rd baseman Brandon Inge scored 2 runs and cut the lead to 9-5. Paul Konerko walked before Carl Everett grounded back to the pitcher. The pitcher came home for the force out but Tigers catcher Ivan Rodriguez threw the ball down the right field line. Lee and Konerko both came around to score and suddenly the Sox were within two. Joe Borchard led off the bottom of the 7th inning with a HR to make it a one run game. Unfortunately, that’s as close as the Sox got thanks to the bullpen. Damaso Marte entered the game in the 8th inning and went on to allow 2 runs to score in the 9th inning. Those 2 runs increased the Tigers lead to 11-8 and significantly hurt the Sox fans of making a comeback. 3 quick outs by Ugueth Urbina in the 9th inning and the Sox lost 11-8.

The Sox will send Jose Contreras to the mound for the middle game of this 3 game set. The game is scheduled to start at 7:05 CDT.

Ozzieball Update:
No Ozzie today so Sox fans get treated to HaroldBall. Bad pitching didn't exactly help to showcase HaroldBall..
