Blow-enweis Exits Early

August 4th at Kansas City

Magglio Watch
Days left on the DL:
Number of special newspaper articles covering it:

"While back at home, Magglio takes in a Devil Rays game, hoping to see a real offense for a change."

Short Take:  Schoeneweis gives up 7 in the first, Rowand only Sox player with a hit.

When the White Sox acquired Freddy Garcia the rotation finally seemed set. After struggling to find a decent 5th starter, the Sox inserted Garcia into the top of the pitching rotation and seemed to solidify the 5th starter spot with other pitchers moving down. Well those days are now gone as the Sox have a new problem with the #5 starter. The problem is named Scott Schoeneweis. He took to the mound on Wednesday night to start for the Sox. Starting for the Royals was a pitcher that was actually worse than Schoeneweis (if that’s possible). The Royals started Brian Anderson with an ERA near 7 and just a 1-9 record. But Sox hitters managed to make Anderson look like Cy Young while Schoeneweis took the Sox out of this ballgame early. The Sox took a 13-0 beating while being completely dominated.

Coming off a month in which he posted an ERA of over 7, Schoeneweis figured to only need to have a decent game in order to keep the Sox in the game. But he couldn’t and the game was virtually over before the Sox even batted a second time. Aaron Rowand led off the game with a double. 3 bad at-bats later, Rowand was left standing on 2nd and the Sox were out of the inning. The hit by Rowand was the only hit that the Sox would have for a long time. In the bottom of the 1st Schoeneweis took to the mound to open the flood gates. Two consecutive singles started the Royals half of the inning before a fly out. Another single scored the first run. But Schoeneweis had a chance to get out of the inning with only 1 run allowed. With runners on 1st and 2nd, Abraham Nunez grounded back to Schoeneweis who made a bad throw to 2nd base. The Sox only got the out at 2nd and there was never a throw to first for the double play. The Royals took advantage of that blunder. A triple and two more singles made the score 4-0 with 2 on for John Buck. After working a full count, Buck smashed a 3-run home run to right field to give the Royals a 7-0 advantage. Schoeneweis allowed two more runs in the 2nd inning before being pulled for Jon Adkins.

Meanwhile, down 7 runs after the first inning, the Sox offense was in shutdown mode. After Aaron Rowand’s double to start the game, not another Sox hit was recorded until the 9th inning! In between there was just one walk, once again coming from Rowand. Rowand finished up going 2-3 with a walk. The rest of the Sox offense went a combined 0-26 with no walks and 7 strikeouts in a horrible showing. Give credit to Jon Adkins who pitched very well in relief of Schoeneweis. Adkins took over in the 2nd with the score 9-0 and a runner on 1st base. It took Adkins just one pitch to record a double play and end the inning. He wound up pitching 3 more innings, allowing just 3 hits and no runs. Mike Jackson pitched 2 innings of mop-up duty as well though he surrendered 2 runs. Neal Cotts pitched the final inning, allowing one hit. Aaron Rowand recorded a 1 out double in the 9th inning for the Sox second hit. 2 outs later the misery was over and the Sox embarrassing 13-0 loss had come to an end.

The Sox go into the rubber match needing to win the series as they are now 6 games back of first place in the AL Central. Jon Garland will start for the Sox against Royals highly touted rookie Zack Greinke. The game is scheduled to start at 7:10 CDT.

Ozzieball Update:
Forgot Ozzieball, tonight was about RowandBall as no one else did anything offensively...
