Free Fall Continues

July 30th at Detroit

Magglio Watch
Days left on the DL:
Number of special newspaper articles covering it:

"Tired of watching the offense struggle to score, Magglio helps Kenny Williams work the phones for help via a trade."

Short Take:  Marte once again walks in the game winning run with the bases loaded; Sox offense still struggling.

The first few losses were nothing big. Losses 1 and 2 were chalked up as regular occurrences. Losses 3 and 4 worried Sox fans as the runs mounted upÖfor the opposition. But now the Sox losing streak has hit a season high at 6 games. A streak that has seen the Sox opponents outscore them 35-17. With each loss comes a new way to lose. Fridayís game saw the Sox find another way to blow a game that they had a chance to win. Missed opportunities and missed pitches cost the Sox in this 5-4 loss.

The Sox allowed the Tigers to take the first lead in this game, and it cost them. A 1 out single in the bottom of the 1st led to a 2 run HR by Dmitri Young. The Tigers grabbed the first lead and never trailed in this game. After the third inning the game took a break as rain delayed the game for one hour and one minute. The Sox didnít record their first base hit until the 5th inning and finally put up some runs in the 6th. The 6th inning brought some excitement to Sox fans who have watched this team struggle to score runs lately. Jamie Burke led off the 6th with a beautiful bunt, catching the Tigers off guard, allowing him to reach 1st base. Aaron Rowand saw this and decided to try the same. This time the Tigers were a bit more prepared, but Tigers 3rd baseman Eric Munson threw the ball away. As the ball rolled into the right field foul section, Burke came around to score and Rowand made his way to 3rd. Two batters later, Carlos Lee flew out to center field to drive in Rowand from 3rd. But the Sox couldnít hold the lead.

After battling back to tie the game, Jon Garland quickly gave the lead back. A leadoff triple followed by a double led to one run for the Tigers with a man on second and no outs. A groundout moved the runner over, and a fly out brought him giving the Tigers a 4-2 lead. Surprisingly though, the Sox managed to battle back once again. They did so in the 8th inning starting with a Ross Gload infield hit. Aaron Rowand followed up with his own single to put runners on 1st and 2nd. Back-to-back hits by Lee and Paul Konerko tied the game and left runners still standing on 1st and 2nd with just 1 out. Carl Everett reached base after hitting the ball off Tigers pitcher Esteban Yan. But Everett pulled up lame while running to 1st and had to be pulled for pinch runner Timo Perez. Joe Borchard struck out with the bases loaded and Joe Crede grounded out, leaving the bases loaded in a tie game.

That meant that Damaso Marte entered the game in the 8th inning, but he once again struggled. After allowing a leadoff bunt single, Marte proceeded to get a pop up bunt for 1 out. A single and an out left the situation at 2 outs with runners on 1st and 2nd. But from then on Marte struggled to consistently throw strikes. Marte walked Rondell White to load the bases and went to 3-2 on Bobby Higginson. On the 3-2 pitch Marte couldnít find the strike zone and walked a run in. Thatís all the Tigers needed as Ugueth Urbina entered the game and got a 1-2-3 save to end the game and give the Sox another loss.

The Sox, desperate for a win, face the Tigers for the 3rd time in this 4 game series tomorrow night. Mark Buehrle will take the mound for the Sox and face off against Mike Maroth. The game is scheduled to start at 6:05 CDT. The non-waiver trade deadline looms as Sox fans wonder if Kenny Williams will do anything to improve this team before 3 PM tomorrow.

Ozzieball Update:
The Sox forced the action a little more in this game with two bunts that led to 2 runs. Unfotunately, they couldn't get a run in with 1 out and the bases loaded and it cost them.
