Oh No, Oakland!

July 15th at Oakland

Today's Free Agency Value:
"Maggs tried to get the rally started for the Sox. Too bad his mates weren't cooperating."

Short Take: Sox hitters have hard time against Harden

Hey Sox fans! You've all heard the old cliche that there's only 2 things in life that are certain--death and taxes, right? Well, for those of us who follow the White Sox, you can add a third part to that old chestnut and make it death, taxes ans Sox losses in Oakland. Sloppy defense and lackluster pitching lead to a 4-2 Sox defeat, as yet another West Coast swing gets off on the wrong foot at the Network Associates Mausoleum, er, Coliseum, where the Sox have won just once in their past 14 tries.

Just when we thought it was safe to start talking about Jon Garland turning that metaphorical corner, he goes out and has a lousy outing like tonight. Jon gives up 4 runs on 6 hits and 5 walks...ughhh. After looking mighty unflappable in this past few outings, he just plain melts down in the 4th inning, walking 3 batters and allowing 3 runs. It didn't help that after making a highlight-reel worthy catch of a Mark Kotsay fly ball in center field, Timo Perez proceeds to throw the ball to the Sox newly acquired invisible first baseman, who misses the ball and allows it to roll into the Sox dugout, bringing home Eric Byrnes. Garland would give up one more run in the 5th on an Eric Chavez solo shot.

The Sox offense looked jetlagged against A's hurler Rich Harden, whose 95-mph-plus fastballs had them baffled all night long. Jose Valentin finally tallied the Sox first hit in the 5th inning, which was promptly erased by Paul Konerko grounding into a double play. Joe Crede managed to reach in the 6th and Sandy Alomar ended the inning repeating what Konerko did in the previous frame. Finally, in the Sox 7th, Willie Harris takes one of his 2 walks on the night and Magglio Ordonez hits his first home run since returning from the disabled list to pull the Sox within 2. Carlos Lee follows up with a single, but the Sox can't bring him around and go down meekly to end the inning. Harris would take his other walk to lead off the 9th, but never had a prayer of scoring with tonight's anemic offense.

Game 2 of what could be a very long weekend is in Oakland tomorrow night with a 9:05 CDT first pitch. Two of the AL's finest young aces duke it out as Mark Buehrle takes to the hill against Barry Zito.

Ozzieball Update:
Move along folks, nothing to see here--no steals, no bunts.
