Freddy's Home Debut Spoiled

July 6th vs Anaheim

Magglio Watch
Days left on the DL:
Number of special newspaper articles covering it:

"Watching this mess only makes Maggs want back in the lineup quicker. Unfortunately Maggs is still recovering....from his 20th place finish in Sunday's Nathan's Hot Dog eating contest, that is."

Short Take:  Freddy Garcia gets Mariner-esque run support in picking up his first loss as a White Sox.

Tuesday marked the home debut of the newest White Sox player….Ben Davis! O, and Freddy Garcia Ok, so the former wasn’t the biggest news of the day, but the latter certainly was. Garcia performed well in his first start with the Sox but made a few mistakes that cost him. This time Freddy took to the mound to show his stuff to the home town fans. Garcia was busy early in the day agreeing to a 3 year $27 million contract extension to stay a member of the White Sox. But armed with his new contract, Garcia was forced to wait a bit longer than he would have liked. A 2 hour 6 minute rain delay pushed back the start of the game. Unfortunately the Sox offense seemed to have fallen asleep early like many of those who could not stay up to watch the late night game. The Sox were outhit in a 6-2 lose to the Angels.

The delay did not seem to bother Garcia early on. He came out and struck out the side in the 1st inning and proceeded to strike out the first batter in the 2nd inning as well. The Sox jumped on the board first in the 2nd inning. With 1 out, Jose Valentin and Paul Konerko recorded back-to-back singles to leave runners on 1st and 2nd base. After the 2nd out, both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Joe Crede took advantage of that pitch by stroking a single to left field to score Valentin. Konerko tried to score as well but was thrown out by the cannon-armed Jose Guillen. That lead lasted until the 4th when the Angels made Garcia pay. With 2 outs the Angels recorded back-to-back singles of their own. On a 2-2 count Garcia hung a slider right over the plate to Jeff Davanon. Davanon did not miss as he crushed the ball to right field for a 3 run homer. That was the last time the Sox saw the lead. In the 5th the Angels got a leadoff double to start the inning. The runner was moved over to 3rd on a sacrifice and scored on a well executed squeeze bunt.

Down 4-1, the Sox offense needed to go to work quickly. Paul Konerko certainly did his part. Leading off the 5th inning, Konerko hit a solo shot to left field to cut the lead to 4-2. Unfortunately no one else brought their bat to the game. While Konerko had 2 hits, the rest of the lineup combined for just 2 hits. Garcia finished up going 8 innings, allowing 4 runs on 7 hits and 2 walks while striking out 7. Neal Cotts entered the game in the 9th and proceeded to allow 2 more runs to the Angels to seal the Sox loss.

The Sox get back at it with the Angels tomorrow at 7:05 CDT. Scott Schoeneweis is expected to be activated from the DL in time for the game and make his return to the Sox rotation. He will oppose Jarrod Washburn.

Ozzieball Update:
Ozzie gets a good start from his newest pitcher, but one pitch costs him when the Sox offense fails to show up.
